Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo Teaser Trailer Released by Neon

Studio Neon has released the debut teaser trailer for director Takashi Miike's action thriller Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, which premieres before the end of the year. The third entry in the franchise takes place in Japan.

The plot follows a gambling-addicted police officer played by Shun Oguri and a mysterious Federal Bureau of Investigation agent played by Lily James. The duo investigates a complicated case involving the kidnapping of the daughter of an influential American family.

Franchise History and Production

Takashi Miike directed the movie, having previously directed Audition, 13 Assassins, Izo, Ichi the Killer, and As the Gods Will. Daisuke Tengana wrote the screenplay based on an idea by late producer Edward Pressman.

Abel Ferrara, director of The Driller Killer, made the original Bad Lieutenant in 1992 starring Harvey Keitel. Martin Scorsese later included the movie in his top ten films of the 1990s. German director Werner Herzog made a remake 15 years later starring Nicolas Cage that shared no plot connections with the original.

Ferrara said anyone making remakes should burn in hell, while Herzog stated he had never seen any of Ferrara's movies and did not know who he was. The creators said Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo serves as a standalone sequel to Ferrara's original film.
