Streaming service Apple TV is producing an original science fiction television series based on Neuromancer, the seminal cyberpunk novel by author William Gibson.
The upcoming show will center on technology and artificial intelligence, positioning it as the closest equivalent to a television adaptation of The Matrix, reported Rubén Jabardo for The Fashion Vibes.

Despite being one of the most recognizable and influential franchises in science fiction history, The Matrix has never made the transition to television as a series. The entertainment industry currently favors expansive cinematic universes and ambitious television spin-offs, making the franchise a natural candidate for long-form TV storytelling.
Several television projects set in the world of The Matrix were previously conceived to explore both its commercial potential and creative scope. However, with no active plans to move forward with a Matrix series, Apple TV is filling that void by adapting the literary source that inspired the franchise.
Adapting the Foundation of Cyberpunk
Gibson published Neuromancer in 1984, establishing the foundational concepts of the cyberpunk subgenre, a futuristic vision of world technology dominated by advanced computing, corporate power, and virtual networks. The novel served as a direct and decisive influence on the development of The Matrix.
When The Matrix premiered in theaters in 1999, its depiction of simulated reality and high-concept action redefined modern science fiction. Yet those groundbreaking ideas originated with Gibson, whose narrative style blurred the boundaries between physical existence and virtual environments.

In Gibson's work, cyberspace was presented as a surreal, dreamlike, visual representation of data. The Matrix took those core themes and reinterpreted them into a prison-like simulated reality for humanity, combining the concept with a tailored philosophical background.
Cyberpunk DNA on Television
While Neuromancer is not a direct Matrix spin-off, the Apple TV series is expected to serve as a worthy spiritual substitute that will generate substantial discussion among science fiction fans. The adaptation aims to translate the core cyberpunk DNA that shaped 1999's landmark film onto the small screen.
It remains to be seen how the final production will translate Gibson's complex world to viewers. However, the project represents a major release for Apple TV as studios continue to expand their television offerings.
