Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson brought a serious dose of glamour to the New York premiere of their upcoming movie Verity at AMC Lincoln Square on Tuesday.
Hathaway, 43, showed off her far-along baby bump on the red carpet in a dazzling black sequin gown. The star wore her long brunette tresses in a half-up, half-down high ponytail and accessorised with silver earrings.
The event marks a major public appearance for Hathaway, who will imminently welcome her third child with her husband Adam Shulman. She made it to the Manhattan premiere after skipping last week's star-studded London premiere for the film.
Hathaway has been married to Shulman, an actor and jewellery designer, since 2012. The couple already share two sons, ten-year-old Jonathan and six-year-old Jack.
Meanwhile, her co-star Johnson, 36, put her toned abs on display in a white fringe bra and matching skirt. She added a pop of colour to her look with bright red lipstick and further accessorised with a diamond necklace and silver earrings.
Johnson recently starred in pal Taylor Swift's music video for Patient Zero alongside Irish actor Colin Farrell. The actress rose to international prominence for her lead role in the Fifty Shades film trilogy.
Cast and red carpet arrivals
Also appearing at the premiere was Josh Hartnett, 48, who stars as devoted husband Jeremy Crawford in the film. The American actor looked suave in a grey suit paired with black dress shoes.
Hartnett was joined on the red carpet by his wife, English actress Tamsin Egerton, 37. Egerton looked chic for the evening in a black mini dress and black heels.
Author Colleen Hoover, 46, also attended the screening to celebrate the big-screen adaptation of her hit book. She looked incredible in a gold gown for the occasion, accessorising with a chunky gold necklace.
Puerto Rican actor Ismael Cruz Cordova, 39, who also stars in the feature, opted for a tailored grey suit and a classic black tie.
Hathaway and Johnson appeared to have a blast at the premiere as they celebrated the project together. The lead duo shared a sweet hug on the red carpet and laughed together while posing for photographs alongside the wider cast.
Plot of Colleen Hoover thriller
Verity was adapted for the screen by Nick Antosca and directed by Michael Showalter. The dramatic thriller will be released in cinemas on October 2.
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, a struggling writer who gets an unexpected lifeline with a dream job offer. She is hired to complete the remaining books in a successful series created by best-selling author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway, after a mysterious accident leaves Verity debilitated.
Enlisted by Verity's husband Jeremy, played by Hartnett, Lowen begins work at the couple's opulent estate. Once there, she discovers an unfinished manuscript that threatens to reveal dark secrets about the pasts of both Verity and her husband.
The young writer is forced to continue her work for Jeremy while trying to determine if the disturbing writings are merely fiction, or a dangerous warning from a dangerous woman.
Pregnancy and Hot Ones challenge
The premiere comes after Hathaway explained why she was unable to promote the film on the popular YouTube talk show Hot Ones, despite her fictional character appearing on the web program.
Speaking on the Talk of the Townsends podcast, Hathaway revealed that her doctor advised her to skip appearing on the show due to her pregnancy.
Hosted by Sean Evans, the premise of Hot Ones involves guests consuming progressively spicier chicken wings while answering questions. The show currently boasts nearly 16 million followers on YouTube.
According to Healthline, consuming spicy foods during late-stage pregnancy is linked to triggering labor. Hathaway stated that her doctor warned her against taking part because it might cause her to go into early labor.
Hathaway explained that while playing her character in the movie, there was a big conversation about whether she would consume the spicy wings. She ate the first three wings for real before switching to dummy wings during filming.
She said she had initially thought she would be able to complete the Hot Ones challenge to promote the movie because it made sense for the character, but health concerns took priority. She noted that she has never done the ten-piece gauntlet on the show and was concerned it could impact her performance in the dramatic thriller.
"You don't want your first kiss ever in your life to be like an on-screen kiss," Hathaway said. "You want that to be, like, a real thing where you're not playing a character at the same time as experiencing something physically."
Hathaway added that she has not done the gauntlet yet and suggested she might attempt the challenge next year after giving birth.
After party in New York
Later in the evening, Hathaway swapped out of her sequined red carpet look and changed into a chic black co-ord for the premiere after party.
She was joined for the post-premiere celebration by her husband Adam Shulman, who matched his wife in an all-black ensemble.
The couple were seen walking hand-in-hand as they arrived at the event in New York ahead of the film's theatrical debut on October 2.
