Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Marvel's Wonder Man series, has defended Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, over the show's sudden cancellation, saying Feige loved the series just as much as he did.
In an interview with The Wrap, Cretton said that if the decision were his alone, a second season would already be in production, and that he believed the same would be true if it were up to Feige.
Wonder Man had been renewed for a second season in March before Disney and Marvel unexpectedly cancelled it. Andrew Guest, the show's showrunner, said in a TikTok video that Disney and Marvel cancelled the series because it did not suit the studio.
Cretton speaks after Spider-Man premiere
Cretton gave the interview to The Wrap around the release of his new film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He also directed the first two episodes of Wonder Man.
Asked by journalist Drew Taylor about the cancellation, Cretton said he loved the series and that, if it were up to him, they would still be making it. He said he thought, though it might sound strange, that the same would be true if it were up to Feige. He said he did not fully understand the streaming business, but that if the show were profitable they would already be making it, because he knew Feige loved it as much as he did. He said the cancellation was a shame, that it hurt him a great deal, and that he still needed to properly understand the reasoning behind it.
Praise for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Asked about the series, Cretton described Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who starred in the title role, as the best, and called Wonder Man one of the most interesting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Asked whether he would make a film starring the actor, Cretton called it an interesting question and said he would. He said streaming offers a level of transparency that film does not, since the numbers make it possible to know for certain whether something is a hit.
What comes next for Cretton and Marvel
Cretton said he did not know what the future held for his relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that he was optimistic and hoped to work on more Marvel projects soon.
