The Barbie sports a purple tank dress, colourful drop earrings and sparkly eye make-up. It was created in collaboration with her sister-in-law Pat Houston, who is president of the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation.

Pat Houston said the release of the doll was "making one of Whitney's dreams come true".

Mattel said the doll celebrated Houston's "record-breaking career, legacy and timeless music". The singer won six Grammy Awards and had four UK number ones.

Personal struggles

Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey. She died at 48 in 2012 after being found unconscious in a bath at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills.

While the star achieved immense success, she had a difficult personal life that included drug issues.

Her daughter Bobbi, whose father was Houston's ex-husband, US singer Bobby Brown, died in 2015 at 22 after she was also found unresponsive in a bath in Georgia.
