FX's limited series "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" has picked up seven Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and already won a Creative Arts Emmy for casting ahead of the Sept. 14 ceremony. But large stretches of the show, which dramatizes the courtship and marriage of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, mix documented events with invented scenes.
The series, starring Paul Anthony Kelly as John and first-time Emmy nominee Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn, opens and closes with the couple heading to the airport on July 16, 1999, the day the Piper PA-32R-301 Saratoga II HP that John was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Martha's Vineyard, killing him, Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette. It carries a disclaimer that it is "inspired by actual events but includes fictional elements."
Executive producer Brad Simpson told Vanity Fair the team never wanted the show to feel "prurient, indulgent, exploitative, horrific," while executive producer Nina Jacobson said they were deliberately restrained about depicting the crash itself, showing John growing disoriented and Carolyn telling him to "breathe" before cutting to the Coast Guard receiving a call about a missing aircraft.
Controversy Before Filming
The series was inspired by Elizabeth Beller's 2024 book "Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy." JFK Jr.'s nephew Jack Schlossberg called the project a "grotesque" way to profit from his uncle's story and traded barbs with producer Ryan Murphy after Murphy suggested Schlossberg, now 33, didn't remember his late relative. Carolyn's colorist, Brad Johns, criticized Pidgeon's hair color in early production photos, telling Vogue fashion people would wonder why she was "all ashed out with her hair only one color."
The Finale's Compressed Timeline
Episode nine, "Search and Recovery," compresses years of the marriage into its final hours. It opens with a therapist advising a trial separation, and includes a scene where John asks whether Carolyn's absence means Rory Kennedy's wedding is "off the table", referencing real accounts that the couple fought over Carolyn not wanting to attend John's cousin's Hyannis Port wedding, which they were traveling to when they died. In the show, Lauren pushes Carolyn to attend and tells John separately to be patient. The finale also depicts John checking into the Stanhope Hotel after a bitter fight, which biographers place closer to their actual final weeks, though Love Story appears to compress roughly two years of the relationship into that single scene.
Diana's Death and the Paparazzi
The show depicts Carolyn devastated by Princess Diana's 1997 death in a Paris car crash, telling John, "She posed for every photo, she did everything right, and they still killed her." Carolyn really was shaken by Diana's death; John told friend Billy Noonan he wasn't sure what to do because "she's really spooked now." Jacqueline Kennedy's former assistant Kathy McKeon wrote in her memoir that Carolyn described photographers as being "almost on top of" her. The series also recreates the paparazzi frenzy that greeted the newlyweds returning from their Turkey honeymoon, including John publicly asking photographers to give Carolyn privacy, something he did in real life, per Beller's book, though the truce reportedly collapsed as soon as the couple began walking to their car.
Family, Wedding and Engagement
Love Story shows Ethel Kennedy summoning Carolyn to her Virginia estate to warn her she'd "never be given the benefit of the doubt again." That meeting really happened, according to J. Randy Taraborrelli's book "The Kennedy Heirs." The show also depicts Carolyn asking Caroline Kennedy to be her maid of honor after Caroline felt excluded from wedding planning, and Carolyn's real 1996 resignation from Calvin Klein, where designer Narciso Rodriguez, a Klein alum, made her wedding dress. Carolyn did have a last-minute dress crisis, needing help getting the zipperless gown over her head after her makeup was finished, according to multiple accounts. The show's version of John's proposal, in a rowboat with a ring resembling his mother's, differs from accounts by Beller and RoseMarie Terenzio, who place the proposal on a boat off Martha's Vineyard during a 1995 holiday weekend.
The Park Fight and Early Romance
The infamous February 1996 fight between John and Carolyn in Washington Square Park, including John seeming to pull off her engagement ring, is drawn from real news coverage, though the show alters the cause: in reality the couple had already been engaged for months, and Terenzio wrote the fight stemmed from John being "taken advantage of" by friends at a wedding. Other invented or altered details include a fictional Ralph Lauren job interview for Carolyn, and a first-date scene at an Indian restaurant that ends with John's stolen bicycle; there is no public record of the specifics of their actual first date.
Daryl Hannah Subplot
The series dramatizes John's on-again, off-again relationship with actress Daryl Hannah, including the real 1994 death of his dog Hank, who was struck by a cab in Central Park, an event friend Sasha Chermayeff recounted in "JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography." Producer Nina Jacobson told Gold Derby the show did not seek input from Hannah, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018, saying producers try to "show respect" to real figures without letting them shape the narrative.
