Wildfires in Western Attica have burned more than 480,000 stremmata since 2018, according to an updated analysis by the National Observatory of Athens. The figure covers six major and separate fires that struck Kineta, the Gerania Mountains, Vilia, Dervenochoria, Parnitha and Porto Germeno over the past nine years.
The Observatory updated its analysis following the recent forest fire in Porto Germeno, which broke out on July 31, 2026. The fire in Porto Germeno was still burning as of the report, and the estimated burned area reflects conditions up to midday on Sunday, August 2, 2026. The Observatory said the analysis would be updated once the final extent of the Porto Germeno fire is known.
The data on the burned areas came from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping service and the European Forest Fire Information System, known as EFFIS. The perimeters of the burned areas were shown on an accompanying map. The Observatory also noted that reforestation had taken place in some of the burned areas, depending on the year of the fire.
The six fires and their burned areas
The Kineta fire in 2018 burned 56,000 stremmata. The Gerania Mountains fire in 2021 burned 71,400 stremmata, and the Vilia fire that same year burned 98,200 stremmata.
The Dervenochoria fire in 2023 burned 116,000 stremmata, while the Parnitha fire, also in 2023, burned 61,000 stremmata. The most recent fire, in Porto Germeno in 2026, has burned more than 80,000 stremmata so far.
