Physiotherapist Sammy Margot has highlighted research showing that low-cost vitamin D supplements could help ease frozen shoulder and back pain for millions of Britons.
Frozen shoulder is a painful condition where joint tissue becomes inflamed and shrinks, causing severe tightness and restricted movement. It affects at least one in 20 Britons, leaving many patients struggling with basic daily tasks while general practitioners have limited treatment options beyond basic physiotherapy.
A study published last year by Indian scientists analysed medical reports from more than 5,000 people, discovering a strong link between vitamin D deficiency, frozen shoulder, and chronic back pain. Researchers suggested that low nutrient levels trigger the release of cells that promote inflammation, directly worsening stiffness and joint distress.

Vitamin D deficiency and joint inflammation
In 2024, experts at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Florida reviewed multiple studies on musculoskeletal health. They concluded that vitamin D possesses key anti-inflammatory effects that directly influence muscle function and tissue healing.
The Florida researchers noted that correcting a deficiency could prove an effective treatment for persistent shoulder problems. Around one in five Britons currently suffers from low vitamin D levels.
Sammy Margot emphasized that any benefit from supplement intake depends on an existing shortage. "Ensuring you have enough vitamin D matters for anyone with a musculoskeletal problem," she said, while noting that the pill will not necessarily act as an immediate painkiller.
Vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin, is synthesized naturally by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight. In the UK, health authorities frequently advise supplement use during autumn and winter months when natural sunlight is insufficient to maintain optimal bone and muscle function.
Limitations of turmeric for shoulder pain
While many patients turn to natural remedies such as turmeric for its reputed anti-inflammatory qualities, Margot warned that research into its efficacy for frozen shoulder remains lacking and inconsistent.
"But as I'm aware, there's no specific trials showing that turmeric or its active ingredient, curcumin, is effective for frozen shoulder," Margot said. "Most of the research into curcumin and joint pain involves knee osteoarthritis, which is an entirely different condition. And even there the evidence is inconsistent."
The UK supplement industry is currently valued between £3.6 billion and £4.8 billion. Millions of consumers regularly purchase over-the-counter capsules hoping to alleviate chronic joint discomfort without prescription medication.
Medical treatments for frozen shoulder
For patients seeking reliable relief from frozen shoulder, Margot recommends corticosteroid injections. These treatments deliver targeted anti-inflammatory medication directly into the shoulder joint to diminish pain and swelling, and can be administered by specialist clinics or trained GPs.
Timing plays a crucial role in how well the injections perform. "There's much stronger evidence for corticosteroid injections if they're performed during the early, more painful stage," Margot explained. She added that once acute pain subsides, targeted mobility exercises and stretching become essential for restoring normal range of movement.
Some medical specialists recommend pairing steroid injections directly with physical therapy to maximize recovery outcomes. While frozen shoulder can eventually resolve on its own without intervention, Margot warned that leaving the joint untreated can take up to three years. "Intervention isn't just about comfort, it's about not losing years of shoulder function," she said.

Supplement options for chronic back pain
Back pain represents one of the most widespread health complaints in the UK, affecting roughly 80 per cent of Britons at some point in their lives. It remains a primary reason individuals seek painkillers, dietary supplements, and alternative therapies.
Margot noted that certain supplements could play a role in improving back pain symptoms. A high-quality trial published last year in the journal Sage revealed that a single dose of high-strength turmeric combined with the herb boswellia significantly reduced back pain in 90 per cent of participants within four hours.
Additional studies evaluating turmeric over a 90-day period showed that patients experienced reductions in disability alongside lower blood markers of inflammation. Furthermore, a 2025 analysis of 17 clinical trials demonstrated that turmeric reduced pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared to a placebo.
Margot described the evidence for turmeric in back and knee pain as more promising than for other supplements, though she stressed that benefits remain modest. She advised that curcumin should be treated as an add-on therapy rather than a replacement for established medical care.
Role of omega-3 and magnesium
Omega-3 supplements may also offer benefits for back pain sufferers, according to Margot. The strongest case exists for individuals who consume very little oily fish or those diagnosed with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
By contrast, despite the growing popularity of magnesium for muscle aches and sleep support, Margot pointed out that very little research supports its use for back pain. Scientific evidence indicates that magnesium primarily assists with muscle cramps rather than spinal discomfort.
Margot explained that back pain stems from diverse causes, including spinal disc issues, joint dysfunction, muscle strain, nerve root irritation, deconditioning, or non-structural factors. "That's why a supplement claim that lumps all of that together is unlikely to work as trials tend to look at specific problems," she said.
Evidence-based solutions for muscle recovery
For standard muscle soreness and long-term recovery, Margot advised that basic lifestyle habits possess far stronger scientific support than dietary capsules. She recommended prioritizing sufficient sleep, consuming adequate protein for muscle repair, and gradually building physical fitness.
Practical investments such as buying a resistance band, attending a single session with a physiotherapist for an individualized exercise plan, or buying supportive footwear offer proven benefits for spinal and joint health.
"Supplements may sometimes produce modest improvements in pain," Margot concluded. "But they cannot restore range of movement, strengthen muscles, or address what caused the pain in the first place."
