Vicentina Pede Desculpas releases official film trailer

Brazilian drama Vicentina Pede Desculpas released its official trailer on Wednesday, 7 October, ahead of its November theatrical launch.

The feature film will open in Brazilian cinemas on 5 November before joining global streaming provider Netflix on 20 November.

The release follows an international festival run that began with a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada, where the movie screened in a competitive section dedicated to auteur cinema and visionary new directors.

It subsequently entered the official competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain, competing for the prestigious Golden Shell award.

Awards selection and Goya bid

The film was initially shortlisted by the Academia Brasileira de Cinema as one of six contenders to represent Brazil at the 2027 Academy Awards. The national selection committee ultimately chose Allan Deberton's Feito Pipa for the Oscar race.

However, the Brazilian Film Academy selected Vicentina Pede Desculpas to compete for a nomination at Spain's Goya Awards, widely recognized as the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars. The annual Goya Awards are presented by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain to honor outstanding achievements in Spanish and international film.

Plot and central conflict

The story follows Vicentina, a 75-year-old retired schoolteacher who embarks on a journey to locate the families of victims killed in a tragic bus crash in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state in southeastern Brazil.

Vicentina seeks to ask the families for forgiveness after official investigations suggest that the crash may have been intentionally caused by her son, Wesley, who was driving the bus at the time of the incident.

Director vision and cast collaboration

Vicentina Pede Desculpas is directed by Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Martins and stars actress Rejane Faria in the title role, alongside co-star Maíra Azevedo. Martins and Faria have collaborated on multiple projects, including the acclaimed 2022 feature film Marte Um, which also represented Brazil during international awards season.

Speaking in a recent interview with CNN Brasil, Martins explained that the narrative is fundamentally focused on the central character's personal experience of grief as she meets with the victims' relatives. The director noted that the title reflects the core premise of the drama, describing her act of asking for forgiveness as a way of navigating her own private mourning process.

Following its festival screenings, the film will complete its national theatrical rollout in early November before becoming accessible to subscriber audiences worldwide on Netflix later that month.
