Undetected Asteroid Grazes Earth at Record Distance

A newly discovered asteroid has grazed past Earth at a record close distance after passing undetected by global monitoring networks prior to its arrival. The celestial object flew past the planet shortly after astronomers finally managed to detect its trajectory.

The space rock was discovered on August 11 by the ATLAS-Teide detection system. Operating at the Teide Observatory, the equipment registered the incoming body barely 24 hours before it reached its maximum approach to Earth.

Astronomers had no prior warning of the close encounter because the object remained unseen during its approach toward the planet. The late detection highlights the constant monitoring required by sky survey teams tasked with tracking small celestial bodies near Earth.

Detection at the Teide Observatory

The ATLAS-Teide system forms part of the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, an automated astronomical survey project designed to search for potentially hazardous objects. The system scans the night sky repeatedly to identify fast moving space rocks shortly before they make a close pass.

The observatory housing the instrument sits on Mount Teide on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. Situated at a high altitude above cloud layers and atmospheric interference, the facility serves as a major international location for solar research and deep space observation.

Tracking Near Earth Objects

Near Earth asteroids are rocky remnants remaining from the early formation of the solar system around 4.6 billion years ago. While astronomical observatories systematically catalog larger space rocks, smaller objects often pass undetected due to their faint reflection of sunlight and high speed.

Early warning networks rely on wide field survey telescopes to flag newly detected objects so astronomers worldwide can perform urgent follow up observations. Researchers will now analyze the data collected during the brief flyby to calculate the asteroid's exact orbit and chart its path.
