Paul-Henri Nargeolet, nicknamed “Monsieur Titanic”, had explored the famous ship’s surroundings many times. After the wreck was discovered in 1985, he had participated in the first expeditions that succeeded in extracting valuable objects from the ship, which stood at a depth of 3,800 meters in the North Atlantic.
This extraordinary aquanaut was about to appear privately at the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the Titanic. The event, which will take place on July 18 at the Porte de Versailles in Paris, will present a collection of unique relics unearthed from the wreckage of the legendary ship.
Originally from Haute-Savoie, Paul-Henri Nargeolet spent the first part of his career as a naval officer. His career took a new turn in 1986 as responsible for the deep response submarines of the French Marine Exploitation Research Institute (Ifremer).
The scientist was one of the five passengers of Titan, this small submarine disappeared near the wreckage of the Titanic. After several days of searches, they were pronounced dead last Thursday.
