How was your return to television?
Laurie Delhostal : As if four months had never passed since I stopped. I was very happy to find the team I worked with and everyone who supported me in my absence.
How did they react when they learned about your illness?
The day after the announcement, I received a bouquet of flowers and received this message: “We’ll keep you warm at Greg’s Team“It really warmed my heart.
How did you decide to go back to work while you were on treatment?
I didn’t want to wait for him to fully recover. And then, I was pretty good with my image. I was not very affected by the disease, I did not lose a lot of hair, which is quite rare. I never left my program at France Info either. The facility’s only sports program.
Where are you sick?
advanced cancer. So I will still have months of treatment. I had the right to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery. I think I’ve done more than half of this medical marathon. The sports metaphor is very clear to me. There is the famous 30km wall to be crossed. But I have a good mind.
You also have many projects…
I am participating in a book on women’s sports and I am thinking of a doctor who will link sports and cancer, two topics that occupy a lot of space in my life today. We recently had the case of football player Sébastien Haller, who played for Dortmund and returned to competition after cancer.
Why did you choose to communicate about the disease?
It was not in my nature. At first, I didn’t think I would do this. When I was told I had cancer, I found myself in a gray area. I did not dare to talk too much about the subject. And I met a female athlete in her circle who admitted that she regretted not talking about it and therefore not getting support. I finally started and I got comfortable very quickly. In addition to the support of those around me, I also received many messages thanking me for talking about it on social networks. Well, much better if it can bring comfort to those who are sick. It is said that one in eight women will get breast cancer. We need to change our perspective on the disease. Today, cancer is no longer a hidden disease. Patients are better followed. Treatments are better tolerated thanks to antiemetics that reduce nausea. You can continue to work while following your treatment. For me it takes one day a week between consultations and treatments. I think if I had stopped working I would have gotten depressed.
How was the diagnosis made?
Completely coincidence. When I had no symptoms, I went to the consultation with feeling. Suffice it to say that I fell out of my chair when the diagnosis was made. We can never say enough to women about the necessity of getting tested.
We know you are a great athlete. Do you continue to exercise despite illness?
I continued to exercise throughout my chemotherapy. This is the message I want to give. We should continue walking or at least doing physical activity. It is mentally and physically good and eliminates products injected into your body. I am proud because I continued to run once a week and sometimes more during my chemo. On the other hand, since the hospital where I was treated was 4.5 km away, I had to walk home after each chemotherapy treatment. Life is a fight and I have the mind of a fighter. You must regain control of your body and tell him, “I’m the boss!” you should say. (laughs)
