EXCLUSIVE: Krapopolis achieved an overtime in the third season before a frame of the animated series was seen by the viewers.
Fox made the unprecedented move to debut the Dan Harmon-created comedy in the 2023-24 season, and has plans to air the series in a two-hour, four-episode block in May displayed, disheveled.
The addition of Michael Thorn, Fox’s president of scripted programming, comes as the company is in the UK for the London screenings, where it will seek international buyers.
Krapopolis had a very long gestation period; Harmon signed a direct deal with the broadcaster in July 2020 with a series commitment. In February 2021, the then-untitled show received a formal series order, becoming the first full-length animated series. A special preview of the show, which was renewed for a second season in October 2022, was originally scheduled for November 2022, but was postponed Welcome to Flatsch takes his place after an NFL doubleheader.
Then the plan was for the series to start in May, along with shows like Jon Hamm Voice Grimsburg and the second season of be dry.
However, it has now been postponed to next season.
While some may think that the continued delay of its debut bodes ill for a network show, the fact that there was a third season before the general public could see it shows Fox’s confidence in it. It also knows that if the animated show is launched during football season, it can have a much higher chance of success. Even if there is a writer’s strike, there is no harm in having the final product in progress.
“The 2023/24 season is the perfect launch pad for this highly anticipated and hilarious animated comedy, complete with multiple seasons of epic laughs for fans,” said Thorn. “The more we see of the production, the more amazed we are at their creativity, storylines, impeccable execution, brilliant cast and ability to create amazing events and outrageous, unexpected hilarity episode after episode.”
The move comes as international buyers have a chance to see it at the London screenings, where Fox – with its recently launched Fox Entertainment Global venture led by Fernando Szew – is also launching the Joel McHale comedy animal control in the International Market with a classy exhibition and event Thursday at the Charlotte Street Hotel.
Krapopolis Set in mythical ancient Greece, it tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to rule the world’s first cities – without wanting to kill each other. The series features the voices of Hannah Waddingham, Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy and Duncan Trussell.
Ayoade speaks Tyrannis, the mortal son of a goddess. He is the benevolent king of Krapopolis trying to make ends meet in a city that lives up to its name. Waddingham plays Deliria, mother of tyranny, goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. Within her extended Olympian family—forged in parricide and infidelity—she is known as the trashy one. Bessie is Shlub, the father of Tyrannis, a mantitaur – half centaur (horse + human), half manticore (lion + human + scorpion). Overworked and underemployed, he claims to be an artist and has literally never paid for anything in his entire life. Murphy voices Stupendous, Tyrannis’ half-sister, daughter of Deliria, and a Cyclops. Trussell plays Hippocampus, Tyrannis’ half-brother, descendant of Shlub and a mermaid, and naturally a hot mess, biologically speaking.
Dove Cameron, Tara Strong and Alanna Ubach return, starring Susan Sarandon, Will Forte, Michael Urie, Jane Lynch, Amber Stevens West, Yvette Nicole Brown and Dave Franco.
Created and performed by Rick and Morty Co-creator Harmon, the series is produced by Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment. Jordan Young serves as showrunner and executive producer.
Fox is also launching the show on the blockchain through its company Blockchain Creative Labs, making the series the network’s first animated television series produced on the blockchain. That means it will sell digital goods and NFTs that offer fans exclusive experiences, including access to token-gated content, exclusive show tuning, private Discord channels, and access to meet-and-greets with the cast and crew.
