These chilling photos are said to have captured the spooky happenings in America’s most haunted city.
Alton, in southwestern Illinois, has a long list of haunted residents, from ghost nuns to a bank robber who haunts the local Irish pubs and hotel guests… who can never leave.
The spooky photos we present here were taken at McPike Mansion, one of the city’s most popular attractions.
It belongs to Sharyn Luedke and her husband George. They bought it as a bed and breakfast, but then turned it into “a historical and paranormal destination.”
A photo shows what appears to be a dark figure standing in the open doorway. Ms Luedke told MailOnline Travel the photo was taken in 1995 by a previous owner, Rick Dixon, with a 35mm camera.
This image shows a seemingly dark figure standing in the open doorway of the McPike Mansion in Alton, southwestern Illinois, considered the most haunted town in America. Owner Sharyn Luedke believes it is the original owner of the 19th century mansion, Henry Guest McPike

She believes the figure in the doorway is the original owner of the 19th-century mansion, Henry Guest McPike, adding: “Rick and his wife Sugie were the last people to live in the house.”
Another image, Ms. Luedke says, show Mr. McPike looking out of a window, while a third window image shows a “little African boy we believe is called Zach, perhaps a child of the servant.”
A fourth photograph taken on the grounds of the villa shows how “energy flies through the air”.

This photo shows a “small African boy who we believe is called Zach, perhaps the child of a domestic worker,” said Ms. Luedke said

Ms Luedke said: “When we bought it, we had absolutely no idea that the villa was haunted.” One of my first experiences was when I saw a man standing at the window seven weeks after I bought the house. He was wearing a shirt and tie and I hadn’t seen any pictures of anyone at that point. I later saw a photo of the family that lived there and recognized one of them as the man I saw in the window.
“I saw many ghosts in the basement, including Henry McPike as a dark shadow.
“One time I was in the basement with some young adults and my family and I heard a loud knock on the door and inside I thought, ‘I’m out of here! But I did my best not to show my fear to the guests.
“The spirits here love people and enjoy interacting with the people who visit the mansion.”
“I once brought a friend home and she asked if I could feel the ground moving. I didn’t, but then I heard the spirits shout: “How could you bring her here!” She must have brought back the spirit of someone from her past. My friend later heard them tell her, “Do not covet my house.”

Alton has a long list of haunted residents. In addition to the McPike chases, there’s also a bank robber hunting the local Irish bar and hotel patrons… who can never leave
“My husband was outside the house and saw two women coming towards him, then he stepped aside and they disappeared into the house. He went in to look for them, but could not find them.
“When I asked them how they were dressed, he said like Native Americans. It makes sense, because there were tribes that lived in the area.”
Ms Luedke added: “Our visitors often take pictures of people in the windows of the house on our tours, which they share on our Facebook page.”
