Tesla Model 3 owner tests roof solar film for a month

An American blogger on the Mostly Offgrid YouTube channel has fitted a solar film kit to his Tesla Model 3 roof in the United States. He reported his findings after using the setup for one month, according to automotive news outlet Supercar Blondie.

The content creator bought the kit to reduce his personal reliance on the electrical power grid. He installed an Ecoflow Heatguard solar film package containing two separate films on top of the EV roof, costing him approximately 450 dollars in total.

The creator explained that the panels attached directly using 3M VHB tape. He described their form factor as great, adding that he noticed neither wind noise nor any loss of efficiency from the panels.

Power output and panoramic roof impact

While the solar film obscures the view through the panoramic sunroof, leaving only a narrow strip in the middle, the creator said the reduced visibility did not bother him. He explained that the cabin gets very hot and that he tries to pass through as much sunlight as possible. On the filming day, the solar system generated 138 watts of power, reaching up to 250 watts on sunny days.

Giving a positive overall review, the blogger concluded that the installation was worth every penny. He noted that drivers who do not mind losing their panoramic view gain a real power station that is invaluable for camping and off-grid living.

Tesla Model 3 fastback sedans feature a prominent glass roof, while Ecoflow produces portable solar systems designed for outdoor and off-grid use. 3M VHB double-sided tape is an industrial acrylic adhesive widely used in automotive exterior modifications.

Endurance test for budget electric crossover

In a separate electric vehicle test, two Australian drivers took an affordable Chinese Geely EX3 electric crossover on an ambitious long-distance journey starting in Melbourne.

The drivers planned to cross the border into New South Wales before turning back. The final route covered 671 kilometres out of an intended 700 kilometres. Including charging, snacks, and delays, the trip took about 11 and a half hours, with the drivers stating that the journey went better than expected.
