Released across 412 cinemas during the final week of August, the debut marked the best opening weekend in the history of the animated saga. The strong commercial performance confirmed the ongoing popularity of Spain's leading animated franchise in direct competition for family audiences.

The film is the fourth entry in the popular Spanish animated franchise centered on Tadeo Jones, a construction worker who becomes a globe-trotting archaeologist. Created as an homage to classic adventure cinema, the character has consistently delivered major box office hits for domestic animation studios in Spain.

Record debut for Rodrigo Sorogoyen

Further down the box office rankings, director Rodrigo Sorogoyen also opened his latest feature film, El ser querido, during the same weekend. The drama grossed 578,139 euros over its first three days.

Having premiered in theaters on Wednesday, El ser querido reached a cumulative total of 878,383 euros across its first five days. The production opened in 322 cinemas nationwide.

The film stars Academy Award winner Javier Bardem alongside Spanish actress Victoria Luengo. Sorogoyen is one of contemporary Spanish cinema's most acclaimed directors, known for suspenseful dramas including As bestas, which won multiple Goya Awards in 2023.

The weekend performance of El ser querido represented the highest opening debut of Sorogoyen's career. Its initial weekend box office total finished 31 percent higher than the debut weekend achieved by As bestas.

Boost for Spanish box office

Expectations for the production had mounted following its international presentation at the Cannes Film Festival. Industry analysts noted that despite operating on a different commercial scale than mainstream animated releases, the film achieved a strong result for adult dramatic cinema.

The simultaneous success of both titles delivered a significant boost to Spanish cinemas at the end of the summer season. By attracting family audiences and adult filmgoers alike, the two releases provided a strong close to August for domestic distributors.
