Customs officers at Krasnoyarsk Airport in Russia discovered a stuffed crocodile inside the luggage of a passenger arriving from Vietnam, officials announced.
The press service of the Siberian Customs Directorate confirmed that officers confiscated the taxidermied specimen during border control checks on an incoming international flight.
The traveler, a Russian woman, arrived at the Siberian airport after flying from Nha Trang, a coastal resort city in south-central Vietnam. Inside her suitcase, inspectors uncovered the stuffed specimen of a Siamese crocodile weighing 1.6 kilograms and measuring 105 centimeters in length.
According to customs officials, the passenger explained that she had purchased the stuffed crocodile as a souvenir while abroad and was unaware of legal requirements to declare it or present permit documents. Authorities subsequently opened an administrative case against her for failing to comply with customs regulations.
A court later ruled to confiscate the specimen and convert it into federal property. Following joint authorization from Russia's environmental watchdog Rosprirodnadzor and the Federal Customs Service, officials transferred the stuffed reptile to scientists at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg, where it will be preserved for cultural, scientific, and educational purposes.
Siamese crocodile protection and trade regulations
The Siamese crocodile is a freshwater crocodilian native to Southeast Asia. Critically endangered due to historical poaching and habitat destruction, the species receives strict protection under international wildlife agreements, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Travelers carrying taxidermied animals or wildlife products across international borders must possess specialized export permits and environmental documentation.
Krasnoyarsk serves as a primary aviation hub in central Siberia, handling direct passenger flights connecting the region to popular tourist destinations in Asia. Customs officials at the airport frequently monitor incoming luggage for undeclared items and restricted biological materials.
Scientific research and previous seizures
The Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, located in Saint Petersburg, is one of Russia's oldest and largest biological research institutions. It maintains extensive taxidermy and specimen archives used by researchers studying biodiversity. Rosprirodnadzor, Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources, oversees environmental compliance and assigns confiscated wildlife materials to scientific institutions.
The confiscation follows a similar incident at a Russian airport involving a male passenger who arrived from Vietnam carrying stuffed crocodiles with pearls inside their jaws. Customs inspectors intercepted the traveler, and experts subsequently confirmed that those specimens also belonged to endangered reptile species.
