Stink bugs can be repelled from windows, balconies and terraces using a simple homemade spray of water and peppermint oil, Hungarian gardening portal kerteszkedj.hu reported.
As autumn approaches, the insects increasingly gather around residential exteriors. During warm daytime hours they bask on outer walls, before attempting to crawl inside as evening temperatures drop.
While a strong mint scent does not necessarily kill the pests, kerteszkedj.hu noted that applying it can make frequently targeted entry points far less attractive to them.
Peppermint spray preparation and application
Preparing the natural repellent takes only a few minutes. The mixture requires pouring roughly half a liter of water into a spray bottle and adding 10 to 15 drops of peppermint essential oil, which is known for its strong aromatic properties. The container must be shaken thoroughly before use.
Application should focus on areas where stink bugs regularly appear. Key locations include window and door frames, balcony doors, outdoor window sills, terraces and spaces near garden furniture.
Because the fragrance gradually dissipates, treatment needs to be repeated periodically, particularly after rain or cleaning. Homeowners should first test the mint solution on a small, hidden surface area. The essential oil spray must not be applied directly to food, household pets, or plants sensitive to essential oils.
Physical barriers and indoor removal
The report emphasized that residents should not rely solely on aromatic deterrents. Sealing physical gaps around window frames, roller shutter boxes and door perimeters provides one of the most effective methods to block insect entry.
Installing properly fitted mosquito netting or mesh screens also helps prevent unwanted indoor access. If a bug manages to slip inside, residents are advised not to crush it, as the defense mechanism releases a characteristic unpleasant odor. Instead, the insect can be covered with a glass or picked up with paper to carry it outside safely.
Broader household pest guidance
The advice aligns with broader coverage on household pest management. Ukrainian news agency UNIAN previously reported on four dangerous insect species threatening gardens and homes, noting that non-native species multiply rapidly because they lack natural local predators.
UNIAN also highlighted expert recommendations for eliminating houseflies, which feature a simple mixture made using readily available ingredients.
