Steven Spielberg to oversee creative work on Transformers 8

Steven Spielberg will take charge of creative direction for the upcoming eighth live-action Transformers movie, according to industry sources.

Paramount Pictures and toy manufacturer Hasbro are close to finalizing plans for the new installment, with former franchise director Michael Bay also in early talks to rejoin the project.

Reports published by Deadline on Tuesday revealed that Spielberg will lead creative development alongside veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. The filmmaker will maintain his role as executive producer while taking on a far more active position in shaping the narrative and visual direction of the feature.

Spielberg previously provided similar creative oversight during the earliest entries of the franchise before shifting to a traditional executive producer role on subsequent films. Di Bonaventura has served as a lead producer on every live-action Transformers movie since the series debuted in theaters.

Bay, who directed the first five movies in the saga, is currently in initial negotiations to return to the brand. Sources emphasized that discussions remain in their early stages and no formal contract has been finalized.

Production team and creative development

Spielberg and Di Bonaventura will guide the new chapter alongside a producing team that includes Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and Hasbro. Together, the team aims to craft a story that honors the tone and legacy of the original live-action movies.

Screenwriter Jason Fuchs is currently writing the script for the eighth installment. Fuchs previously wrote the screenplay for the 2017 blockbuster superhero film Wonder Woman, the 2024 spy thriller Argylle, and developed the horror prequel television series It: Welcome to Derry.

Specific plot details for the upcoming movie are being kept secret by the studio. However, production insiders revealed one central narrative element: the story will take place in the present day rather than serving as a period piece.

Franchise history and box office success

The Transformers film saga began in 2007 with the release of the first live-action movie, directed by Bay and executive produced by Spielberg. Inspired by Hasbro's popular line of transforming action figures, the story introduced audiences to the clash between alien robot factions.

The central storyline followed the war between the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons across five feature films. In the franchise lore, Autobots and Decepticons are sentient mechanical beings from the planet Cybertron that can disguise themselves as human vehicles and technology.

That original narrative arc concluded in 2017 with Transformers: The Last Knight. Following that release, Paramount expanded the brand with new standalone projects, including the 2018 spin-off Bumblebee, the 2023 sequel Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and the 2024 animated feature Transformers: One.

Over nearly two decades in theaters, the Transformers franchise has generated more than $5.4 billion in global box office revenue. The series ranks among the highest-grossing film franchises in cinematic history, establishing Hasbro as a major force in Hollywood intellectual property adaptations.

Studio restructuring and future plans

The push for an eighth live-action movie comes after a period of significant corporate restructuring at Paramount Pictures. Coproducers made revitalizing the flagship science-fiction franchise a top priority following the completion of the merger between Skydance Media and Paramount in August 2025.

After the merger closed, studio executives sought to re-engage Spielberg to helm the creative development of the new film. The studio views his involvement as essential for reinvigorating the franchise and charting its future direction.

Full production timetables and release dates for the eighth movie have not yet been announced as script writing continues under Fuchs. Further announcements regarding director attachments and casting are expected as negotiations progress.
