Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' Getting New TV Adaptation

Director Mike Flanagan is set to adapt Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' for TV after its 2017 film version flopped with critics and audiences.

Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' Getting New TV Adaptation

Stephen King's fantasy epic "The Dark Tower" is set to receive a new television adaptation from director Mike Flanagan, one of the filmmakers most closely associated with successful screen versions of King's work.

It may be the most ambitious fantasy series in decades: it carries Stephen King's name and Tolkien's influence

The project marks a second chance for the sprawling saga after its previous adaptation, a 2017 feature film starring Idris Elba, failed both critically and commercially, receiving poor reviews.

What 'The Dark Tower' is about

"The Dark Tower" is set in a parallel universe and follows Roland Deschain, the last of the Gunslingers, on a quest to find the mysterious Dark Tower. According to the story, the Tower sits at the center of all universes and realities, and its destruction could bring about the end of every world.

The saga blends dark fantasy, horror, science fiction and western elements. Its vast scale is what makes it especially difficult to adapt for the screen. King himself has acknowledged the influence of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" on the saga's development, and the story carries echoes of the sweeping mythology the British author built for Middle-earth.

Why Mike Flanagan is seen as the right fit

Flanagan has already shown he can bring particularly difficult Stephen King stories to the screen. His relationship with the author began with "Gerald's Game," a project that earned Flanagan public praise from King himself, making him, in the eyes of many, the ideal choice to take on this new challenge.

If "The Dark Tower" adaptation succeeds, Flanagan could have the opportunity to build a vast shared universe by drawing on how the novel connects to King's other works. That would allow the production to become far more than just another King adaptation, potentially marking the start of one of the most ambitious fantasy projects in modern television.

Tolkien's lasting influence on fantasy

J.R.R. Tolkien is widely credited with establishing the foundations of modern fantasy through his Middle-earth universe, which grew even more revered after its acclaimed film adaptations. Few fantasy works since have matched the scale and complexity of what Tolkien built, though King's Dark Tower saga, shaped in part by that same influence, now has a chance to join that rarefied company on television.
