The fourth season of the prequel show indicates that the iconic vessel has been in active service for more than 20 years. This historical timeline makes Captain Pike the only Enterprise commander in a Star Trek series whose direct commanding officer also previously led the exact same starship.

In Star Trek: The Original Series, James T. Kirk did not answer directly to Christopher Pike. Strange New Worlds has adjusted the relationship between the two officers so that Kirk learns directly from Pike before taking over the starship.
This mentorship between April and Pike echoes the dynamic between Captain Pike and James T. Kirk in the 2009 Star Trek feature film directed by J.J. Abrams. In that movie, Pike served as a father figure to Kirk and provided the primary motivation for Kirk joining Starfleet.
Kirk eventually succeeded Pike as captain of the Enterprise and continued reporting to Admiral Pike until the senior officer died in the feature film Star Trek Into Darkness.
