Stamatis Gonidis Reveals Past Battle With Depression

Stamatis Gonidis Reveals Past Battle With Depression

Greek singer Stamatis Gonidis revealed he once suffered from depression, in an interview with the show "Kalimera Eipame?" that aired on the morning of Saturday, September 12, 2026.

The popular performer spoke candidly about difficult periods in his life, admitting he has hurt people and has also been hurt himself. He said he got through the depression with the help of prayer and humor.

He said people who see him at first tend to think he is unapproachable and hard to get close to, but that this is not the case, and that it is actually easy to approach him as long as it is done with honesty and authenticity.

Gonidis then made a personal confession about his depression, saying it was the first time he had spoken publicly about that period of his life on a television program. He said he had suffered from depression and had never mentioned it on a show before, adding that humor and prayer had helped him a great deal, and that Christ wants joy, love and life.

The singer also spoke about mistakes he has made in his life, acknowledging that he has hurt people while also having been hurt himself. He said he sometimes feels worse than everyone else, believing himself to be the most sinful person in the world. He said he has sinned against himself, has hurt people and has been hurt, and that whatever a person sows, they reap.

Warm words for Yiannis Parios

In the same interview, Gonidis spoke warmly about fellow Greek singer Yiannis Parios, a veteran performer known across Greece for a career spanning decades. Yiannis Parios has long been regarded as one of the country's most recognisable voices in popular and traditional song.

Gonidis said he had cried listening to Parios's songs before he himself became well known, and stressed the lasting quality of Parios's voice and music. He said that taking away someone's song is like taking away their soul, that Parios had found himself in an unlucky moment, and that a little respect would not hurt. He described Parios as a great singer whose music has no age, saying it carries history.

Club residency and new album

Alongside his television appearances and interviews, Gonidis is continuing his regular musical work. Since September 4, 2026, he has been fronting a live band at Vog Club Athens on Poseidonos Avenue in Alimos, a coastal suburb south of Athens known for its strip of nightclubs and music venues, performing there every Friday and Saturday. He is joined on stage by Lena Zevgara and Lefteris Krikis.

The 68-year-old singer has also announced that he is gradually releasing a new album, which will include 18 new songs.
