Sporting Cristal defeated Juan Pablo II 2-0 at the Estadio Alberto Gallardo in Lima on Sunday, with Hernán Barcos and Santiago González on the scoresheet in the Torneo Clausura of Peru’s Liga 1.
The first half ended goalless after a tightly contested 45 minutes. A VAR review was called to examine a possible penalty in Cristal’s favor, but the referee opted not to award the spot kick. Midfielder Yoshimar Yotún and defender Miguel Araujo were both cautioned for the home side before the break.
Sporting Cristal came out sharper in the second half. Barcos, the experienced veteran striker, broke the deadlock to put the hosts ahead. Argentine winger Santiago González then added a second to seal the result and earn Cristal three points in front of their home support.
Álvaro Rojas received a yellow card for Juan Pablo II as the visitors’ evening unraveled in the closing stages.
Cristal’s domestic focus after continental exit
The result carried extra weight for Sporting Cristal, who arrived at the match under significant pressure. The club, coached by Roberto Mosquera, had recently been knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana by Brazilian side Bragantino, ending what had been described as one of the club’s major institutional objectives for the season.
With that continental campaign over, Cristal’s management and supporters have demanded the squad turn full attention to the Clausura. The club’s aim is to force their way into the year-end Playoffs and challenge for the national title.
Cristal’s form in the Clausura had been mixed going into Sunday’s game. They had beaten Deportivo Garcilaso narrowly at the Gallardo but then suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Melgar in Arequipa.
Juan Pablo II arrive unbeaten from the north
Visitors Juan Pablo II College, from the northern city of Chongoyape, had come into the match in strong form. The club was unbeaten in the Clausura, having collected four points from a possible six, placing them provisionally third in the standings.
Their standout performer this campaign had been midfielder Josué Torres, who had scored in consecutive matches against FC Cajamarca and Cienciano. He was supported by experienced attacker Nicolás Leguizamón and Uruguayan creative player Martín Alaníz.
Their opening Clausura fixture had seen them come back from a man down to draw 2-2 with FC Cajamarca, before comfortably beating Cienciano 2-0 at their own ground. Despite that momentum, Sunday’s trip to Lima proved a step too far as Cristal’s greater quality told over two second-half goals.
