German developers have unveiled a smart toilet seat fitted with electrocardiogram sensors capable of detecting signs of atrial fibrillation during a routine bathroom visit, according to the New York Post.

The device, called the HARO EKG-seat, uses built-in electrodes to read heart activity while a person sits for around 30 seconds. The data is then sent to a mobile app that analyses heart rhythm and looks for signs of arrhythmia.

In a preliminary study, researchers compared readings from the seat’s six-channel ECG system against a standard 12-channel medical ECG and reported a high degree of agreement between the two. Study participants were also able to complete the screening without any instructions or specialist assistance.

Why It Matters

Atrial fibrillation is considered the most common heart rhythm disorder, yet roughly a third of patients are unaware they have it because the condition often causes no symptoms. Cardiologists noted that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, and that beginning therapy within the first year after arrhythmia appears can considerably reduce the risk of complications.

Specialists also warned that a stroke is sometimes the first sign of the disease, with atrial fibrillation estimated to cause approximately one in every seven strokes, often severe ones due to the formation of large blood clots in the heart.

Who Is at Risk

The likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation increases with age. Other risk factors include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, hyperthyroidism, smoking, and regular alcohol consumption. Specialists noted that roughly one in three new cases is linked to alcohol use, and that doctors use the term “holiday heart syndrome” to describe rhythm disturbances that arise after heavy drinking during festive periods.

The developers cautioned that the technology has not yet undergone independent peer review, and that further trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness.
