Production on the second season of Shōgun has officially wrapped in Vancouver after nearly 200 days of filming, FX has announced.
The new season, which features a ten-year time jump and is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2027, moves beyond the plot of James Clavell's original 1975 novel to deliver an original narrative rooted in historical Japanese events.

Filming for the television series began in Vancouver at the end of January and continued for approximately seven and a half months before concluding. To mark the end of shooting, FX released a short behind-the-scenes video offering a first look at the sets, costumes, and character designs prepared for the new episodes.
Behind the scenes footage and production details
The preview video highlights the extensive set construction undertaken in Canada to recreate feudal Japan, detailing the elaborate wardrobe and scenic design built for the continuation. The footage also features returning cast members in costume alongside several new additions to the ensemble.
Hiroyuki Sanada appears in the promotional clip as Yoshii Toranaga, reprising his lead role from the first season. Sanada has also taken on expanded responsibilities behind the camera for the second season, moving up from his previous role as producer to serve as an executive producer on the production.
Among the new cast members featured in costume in the footage is Ren Meguro, who joins the series for its second season. The production team spent nearly 200 days constructing sets and filming across Vancouver locations to build the world for the upcoming chapter.
A ten-year time jump and returning cast
The storyline for the second season picks up ten years after the events of the initial season, reuniting Hiroyuki Sanada's character with Cosmo Jarvis, who returns as English navigator John Blackthorne. The relationship between Toranaga and Blackthorne formed a central pillar of the original narrative.
In addition to Sanada and Jarvis, a large portion of the original ensemble cast will return for the new season. FX confirmed the return of Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri, who will all reprise their respective roles alongside a group of new characters.
Set during late 16th-century feudal Japan, the historical drama follows the political power struggles of feudal lords competing for control of the country. In Clavell's narrative, Blackthorne's arrival in Japan alters the balance of power as Toranaga navigates dangerous rivalries among competing regents.
Moving beyond the original James Clavell novel
The continuation into a second season marks a fundamental shift from the show's initial development plan. When Shōgun premiered on Disney+ in 2024, FX originally designed the project as a self-contained limited series meant to adapt Clavell's book across a single season.
The first season covered the entire 1975 novel from start to finish, bringing to a close the complete story arcs written by Clavell for Blackthorne, Toranaga, and the surrounding figures. Because no further written material exists from the author, the second season relies on an original story created specifically to expand the television adaptation while taking inspiration from historical Japanese history.
Clavell's novel was previously adapted for television in a landmark 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. The 2024 adaptation revisited the classic literary text with modern production values, cinematic scope, and an authentic Japanese-language script.
Record-breaking Emmy success and 2027 release
The decision by FX to greenlight a second season followed extraordinary critical acclaim and commercial performance on Disney+. The first season of Shōgun made television history by winning 18 Primetime Emmy Awards, setting the record for the most Emmy wins by a single season of a television series.
That unprecedented awards sweep, combined with strong viewership figures on streaming platforms worldwide, prompted network executives to reconsider the self-contained format and move forward with expanding the franchise into subsequent seasons.
With principal photography now concluded in Vancouver, the project enters post-production. Although FX and Disney+ have not yet announced a specific calendar date for the premiere, the second season of Shōgun is confirmed to debut on Disney+ in 2027, beginning a multi-year waiting period for audiences eagerly anticipating the next chapter.
