Actor Samuel Monroe Jr, best known for his role in the 1993 classic film Menace II Society, has died at the age of 52 following a months-long battle with meningitis.
His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed to TMZ that the veteran actor passed away at a hospital at around 10.24pm on Wednesday.
Patton revealed the news of her son's death on Facebook, writing that "today God called him home." She asked for prayers for the family, writing: "I want to thank all of my facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son. But today God called him home. Please honor my final request to pray for the family especially his 3 children."
Prolonged Hospitalization and Health Complications
Monroe had been on life support in a Southern California hospital since April after suffering several health issues following his meningitis diagnosis. During his prolonged stay in the hospital, his family received further painful news when the actor contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia, a severe lung infection.
The actor was subsequently diagnosed by doctors with failing kidneys and was put on dialysis. In addition to kidney treatment and antibiotic regimens, Monroe endured two brain surgeries during his medical crisis.
MRSA pneumonia, which is often contracted in hospital settings, causes inflamed lungs to fill with fluid or pus, making breathing difficult. The infection is resistant to several types of antibiotics, complicating medical treatment. Untreated cases can lead to potentially deadly sepsis, where the body overreacts to infection and attacks healthy tissues, as well as septic shock, where blood pressure plummets and organs fail.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), bacterial meningitis causes the death of one in six people affected by the disease. Meningitis involves an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Misdiagnosis and Las Vegas Infection
Monroe's spouse, corporate tech executive and voice actor Shawna Stewart, revealed to Complex that the actor originally contracted meningitis approximately 18 months ago while filming in Las Vegas.
Stewart explained that Monroe visited several different hospitals, where medical staff repeatedly misdiagnosed his condition. She stated that due to negligence, the infection remained untreated for eight months, allowing it to spread to his spine and brain before it was finally identified.
In April, Stewart told TMZ that doctors had diagnosed Monroe with failing kidneys just two days after he was diagnosed with MRSA pneumonia. Medical teams initiated a new antibiotic regimen to combat the bacterial infection while his family waited to see if the treatments would prove effective. In her statement to Complex, Stewart asked supporters to "keep him in their prayers, as Samuel remains on life support due to meningitis."
Family Support and Medical Fundraising
Monroe is survived by his wife, Stewart, and their two children, 12-year-old Kingston Monroe and 11-year-old Brooklynn Monroe. Patton also noted in her statement that he leaves behind three children.
To assist with his medical expenses, Monroe's family established a GoFundMe fundraising campaign. The page description read: "Every donation, no matter the size, will help ease the burden on Samuel’s family and ensure that Kingston and Brooklynn have the support they need while their father fights for his life." The crowdfunding campaign also disclosed that Monroe had undergone two brain surgeries before being placed on life support.
Earlier in his hospitalization, Patton had expressed her devotion on Facebook, writing: "God don’t make no mistakes, but he is gracious, and I am humbly asking for his mercy and grace for Sam. I love you, son, to the moon and back 100 times."
Breakthrough Role in Menace II Society
Monroe was best known for his performance in the 1993 teen crime drama Menace II Society, which starred Samuel L Jackson, Tyrin Turner, and Jada Pinkett Smith. In the film, Monroe played a small role as the cousin of Ilena, played by Erin Leshawn Wiley.
In the movie's plot, main character Kaydee "Caine" Lawson, portrayed by Tyrin Turner, impregnates Ilena and later physically beats Monroe's character. Seeking vengeance, Monroe's character and his friends carry out a drive-by shootout that leads to Caine's death at the end of the film.
Film, Television, and Music Career
Following his breakthrough, Monroe appeared in several prominent 1990s films and television series. His screen credits included Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Set It Off, Tales from the Hood, Out All Night, and NYPD Blue.
His more recent acting credits included playing The Intruder in the 2021 feature film Lockdown 2025, a project centered on a viral outbreak leading to a nationwide lockdown and martial law. Monroe's final acting role was as Zero in the 2022 television movie Shine Kings.
In addition to acting, Monroe worked behind the camera as a writer, director, and producer. He produced his own television series, The Halls, which focused on young children entering the juvenile hall system. Monroe also pursued a rap career, recording songs produced by prominent music producers including Battlecat and Duane Nettlesbey.
