Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 2026 Emmys, held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, for her performance in Remarkably Bright Creatures.
The 79-year-old beat Sarah Pidgeon, nominated for Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Claire Danes for The Beast in Me, Carey Mulligan for Beef and Sarah Snook for All Her Fault to take the prize, becoming the oldest performer to win in the category.
"This was not supposed to happen," Field quipped while accepting the award.
She went on to speak about her decades in the industry. "I have been so grateful and so proud to be a part of this community, the arts, for 62 years," Field said. "We're the arts. We matter. Our voices matter. Our diversity, our unique storytelling matters. We can't let those voices be silenced, or compromised, or merged."
A Fourth Emmy Win
The award marks Field's fourth Emmy. She previously won in the same category in 1977 for Sybil, took home Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2001 for ER, and won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Brothers & Sisters.
A Speech Stumble
During her acceptance speech, Field also had a lighthearted recovery after stumbling over the name of author Shelby Van Pelt, whose novel Remarkably Bright Creatures inspired the film.
"I love this project from page one of this lovely novel by Shelby Van Pelt, whatever her name is," she said. "She knows what it is. This story of an old woman, a young man and an octopus doesn't come around a lot."
Field said she had read about three chapters of the book before immediately signing on to the project, which also stars Lewis Pullman.
Why Field Took the Role
Speaking to People in May, Field explained why the part appealed to her. "Because I'm old, it's very hard to find a role that's interesting for an older woman," she said. "I never take to the kinds of stories about women and older women that are trying to find a man."
The two-time Oscar winner said those kinds of stories never appealed to her, even when she was younger. "It doesn't appeal to me," she explained, "because I think women are about so much more."
Speaking to People in February, Field called Remarkably Bright Creatures "life-affirming." "It's an homage to life, to creatures, and the connection that human beings have to creatures," she said. "Even when we were shooting, we were constantly noodling and fixing and letting it breathe and have its own existence outside of the book. It was a long journey."
