A 30-year-old woman from Novy Urengoy gave birth to a son aboard a passenger plane, according to the official page of Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Her name was not disclosed in the report.
The regional government published the report on VKontakte, a Russian social network widely used across Russia and other former Soviet states, similar to Facebook. It posted the account at 19:12 Moscow time on September 13, 2026, with a minor update six minutes later.
The woman went into labor during a flight from Krasnoyarsk to Novy Urengoy. Flight attendants gave her first aid, and the crew alerted the airport in Novy Urengoy about the situation before landing.
Medical staff were waiting on the ground when the plane touched down, including airport paramedic Svetlana Trapeznikova and an ambulance crew made up of Vera Vilkova and Orkhan Sadikov. After examining the woman, doctors decided to deliver the baby on board rather than move her.
The delivery was successful. The boy was born measuring 51 centimeters and weighing 2,980 grams. The mother and baby are now in a maternity hospital, and regional officials said their health and lives are not at risk.
Novy Urengoy and the flight route
Novy Urengoy is a city in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, a gas-producing region in the Russian Arctic in western Siberia. The okrug's capital is Salekhard, and the region is one of Russia's main sources of natural gas exports. Krasnoyarsk, where the flight began, is another major Siberian city, located to the south on the Yenisei River.
A similar case on a Delta Air Lines flight
The report also referred to an earlier case in which a passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight gave birth half an hour before the plane landed in the United States. Delta Air Lines is one of the largest airlines in the United States, based in Atlanta, Georgia. Paramedics who happened to be on board used a flight attendant's shoelace as a tourniquet to help insert a catheter.
