Russian tourists choose South-East Asia over Middle East

Russian tourists are shifting holiday plans from the Middle East to South-East Asia due to ongoing regional conflict, according to expert Galina Dekhtyar.

Russian tourists choose South-East Asia over Middle East

Russian holidaymakers are swapping Middle East vacations for destinations in South-East Asia, expert Galina Dekhtyar told news outlet Pravda.ru. Dekhtyar, a professor at the School of Hospitality within the Institute of Management at RANEPA, explained that ongoing conflict in the region has driven down tourist interest in Middle Eastern trips.

According to Dekhtyar, holiday demand has shifted specifically towards Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. Vacationers looking for warm destination options are increasingly turning to these South-East Asian nations as alternatives to traditional resort spots.

Dekhtyar noted that Russian travellers are already well acquainted with established holiday destinations in Egypt and Turkey. In contrast, South-East Asia attracts visitors with its sea, beaches, picturesque landscapes and cultural sites, providing plenty of sights for travellers who are ready to make the trip.

Alternative holiday destinations

Turkey and Egypt have long served as primary resort hubs for Russian holidaymakers seeking coastal breaks, with popular areas along the Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts offering direct flight connections. However, ongoing security concerns and regional instability in the Middle East have prompted families and individual travellers to seek out calmer alternative regions.

South-East Asian nations have expanded their appeal to international visitors through diverse natural and cultural attractions. Countries such as Indonesia, famous for resort islands like Bali, Malaysia, known for its rainforests and island retreats, and Vietnam, home to coastal beach towns, offer tropical climates and established tourist infrastructure.

Institutional research and travel trends

Dekhtyar operates within the School of Hospitality at RANEPA, formally the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. The Moscow-based university is one of Russia's major public research institutions, regularly analyzing consumer trends, hospitality management and economic shifts for publication in domestic news outlets like Pravda.ru.

The shift in consumer interest comes after Russian travellers were previously presented with top recommendations for extending their summer season. In earlier industry advice, holidaymakers were advised to consider destinations across both the Middle East and Asia when planning late-season warm-weather breaks.
