A Russian senator is pushing to produce a feature film about a 2022 airborne raid near Kyiv, he told the state news agency TASS.
Airat Gibatdinov, a member of the Federation Council’s science and education committee and of the Communist Party’s central committee, said he and military personnel are working toward production of a film titled Gostomel Airborne. He said negotiations are underway with Russia’s ministries of culture and defence, as well as with producers and directors.
The operation took place on February 24, 2022, when Mi-24 attack helicopters escorted Mi-8 troop carriers to Antonov airfield in Gostomel, 25 kilometres from Kyiv. Paratroopers from two airborne brigades held the site for four days until reinforcements arrived.
Gibatdinov said the episode had already entered modern military history and deserved its own film, arguing that audiences should learn the names of soldiers through strong cinema, not only through news coverage. He added that state support for such productions was necessary.
