The passenger, from the city of Ussuriysk, was travelling with his family from Vladivostok to Shanghai. They were scheduled to transfer in the Chinese city to another airline for an onward flight to Seoul.

Ussuriysk and Vladivostok are located in Russia's Far Eastern Primorsky Krai region, which shares land borders with China and North Korea. The region sits on the Sea of Japan, making nearby Asian transport hubs the most common route for local residents to reach other international destinations.

The initial flight from Russia was delayed, resulting in the family of four missing their connection to the South Korean capital. The man was forced to purchase new tickets for his family on the spot, which cost a total of 125,000 rubles.

Rejected airline claim

The passenger initially submitted a claim directly to S7 Airlines to cover the unexpected financial losses. The carrier rejected his request, according to a statement released by the united press service of the courts of Primorsky Krai on the Max messaging app.

S7 Airlines, also known as Siberia Airlines, is one of the largest passenger carriers in the Russian Federation. The company operates an extensive domestic network alongside international routes connecting Russian airports with countries in Asia and the Middle East.

Under Russian consumer protection legislation and standard aviation regulations, airlines are typically required to compensate passengers for financial losses incurred due to missed connections, provided the original delay was caused by the airline's own operations.

Following the rejection of his claim, the man took the dispute to the regional court. During the legal proceedings, S7 Airlines was unable to prove the existence of force majeure circumstances that could have justified the delay to the flight out of Vladivostok.

Financial penalties

The court ruled in the passenger's favour and ordered the airline to reimburse the 125,000 rubles spent on the replacement tickets to Seoul. S7 was also instructed to pay 5,000 rubles in compensation for moral damage.

In addition to the direct compensation, a fine of 300,000 rubles was imposed for the flight delay itself. The court ruled that S7 Airlines must pay another 65,000 rubles for its initial refusal to satisfy the passenger's demands, and a further 8,000 rubles will be transferred to the local budget income.

Ruined expedition

In a separate travel dispute previously reported in Russia, a woman successfully sued for 8.4 million rubles over a ruined cruise to the North Pole.

Tourist expeditions to the North Pole are highly specialized and exclusive journeys. They are typically conducted on Russian nuclear powered icebreakers navigating the Arctic Ocean, which accounts for the exceptionally high cost of the tickets.

The woman was promised that her money would be refunded within a year of the cancellation. However, she has only received a payout of 13,600 rubles so far.
