Russia blames West for major drone attack on Moscow

Senior Russian lawmaker Svetlana Zhurova claimed Ukraine could not have launched a massive drone attack targeting the Moscow region without direct assistance from Western nations.

Her statement followed an attempt by hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike the region surrounding the Russian capital, marking one of the largest aerial operations in the past two years.

Speaking to Russian news outlet Lenta.ru, Zhurova asserted that it was 100 percent impossible for Ukrainian forces to organize an attack of such scale using only their own resources. She stated that Western financial, military, and technical aid was critical to enabling Ukraine's long-range strikes against Russian territory.

Zhurova serves as the deputy chairperson of the Committee on International Affairs in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament in Moscow. A prominent public figure, she was an Olympic gold medalist in speed skating at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin before entering politics and joining the ruling United Russia party.

Skepticism over peace talks

The parliamentarian emphasized that recent declarations by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding readiness for peace negotiations carried no real force. She noted that just days after Zelensky spoke about sitting down at the negotiating table, Ukrainian forces launched fresh strikes against Russian regions.

Zhurova said it was useless for Russian officials to comment on verbal statements from Kyiv when those words were routinely followed by military action. She questioned whether Zelensky made such remarks in an effort to cause Russian authorities to lose their vigilance.

She added that the Russian military does not relax for a single second, fully aware that statements about potential talks mean nothing while military attacks continue. Zelensky, who was elected president of Ukraine in 2019, has frequently called for diplomatic solutions contingent on security guarantees and territorial restoration.

Drone interceptions and target locations

Addressing the effectiveness of the raid, Zhurova stated that information regarding intercepted and downed drones should serve as a clear signal to Kyiv that its attacks are failing to reach their targets.

The lawmaker claimed that the drones failed to hit any military facilities that Ukrainian commanders could subsequently report on. She raised concerns over why strikes were directed toward peaceful residents and questioned why civilians were once again dying in such attacks.

Separately, military expert Oleg Ivannikov offered an analysis regarding the probable launch site of the unmanned aircraft. Ivannikov, a lieutenant colonel and advisor to the Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences, stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces likely launched the drones toward the Moscow region from the Kyiv region.

Strategic context and regional geography

The Kyiv region is located in northern Ukraine, surrounding the country's capital city of Kyiv, located several hundred kilometers from the Russian border. Launching long-range drones from this area requires advanced guidance technology and flight path planning to bypass regional air defense systems.

The Russian Academy of Rocket and Artillery Sciences is a state scientific institution in Moscow that conducts research on missile technology, weaponry, and artillery systems for defense authorities. The Moscow region, also known as Moscow Oblast, encompasses the suburban territories and infrastructure surrounding the Russian capital.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated into a full-scale war in February 2022, during which long-range drone warfare has become a central tactic for both sides. Russian officials maintain that monitoring airspace and tracking Western involvement in Ukrainian military planning will remain top defense priorities.
