Ridley Scott clarifies limited role in Blade Runner 2099

Director Ridley Scott has clarified his involvement in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video science-fiction series Blade Runner 2099, confirming he had no creative role.

Speaking in an interview, Scott explained that he was not creatively involved in expanding the franchise because the project had simply fallen into oblivion over time.

The filmmaker said he could not blame his lawyers or his agents at the time, but stated that they had somehow let Blade Runner escape. He added that when a creator is not the author of a written work, they hold no rights over it.

Despite his lack of creative direction on the new series, Scott remains linked to Blade Runner 2099 as an executive producer. He originally revealed in 2021 that development on a television project had begun, with progress continuing through the writing of a pilot script. However, recent statements indicate that his creative connection ended later during production.

Franchise origins and executive production

Scott directed the original Blade Runner film in 1982 following his work on the 1979 classic Alien, establishing visual and thematic foundations that defined science fiction across cinema and television. The original movie was adapted from Philip K. Dick's dystopian novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and introduced audiences to bioengineered synthetic humans known as replicants.

Decades after the original release, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve directed the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049. Scott served as an executive producer on that feature film, maintaining an overarching supervisory role while Villeneuve led the project's creative direction.

Scott's reduced involvement on Blade Runner 2099 contrasts directly with his hands-on participation in the creation of Alien: Earth, another major television expansion of his landmark cinematic works.

Setting and plot details for Blade Runner 2099

Set half a century after the events of Blade Runner 2049, the Prime Video series depicts a future version of Los Angeles that has been completely subjugated by replicant control. In this society, human beings are treated as oppressed citizens under the ruling synthetic population.

The narrative centers on Olwen, a replicant played by Michelle Yeoh who is approaching the end of her lifespan. Olwen teams up with Cora, a human character who disguises herself as a replicant. Together, the pair join forces to hunt down a gang of replicants who serve as the main villains of the story.

Series format and release date

Showrunner Silka Luisa confirmed that the production team intentionally planned Blade Runner 2099 as an eight-episode miniseries. Luisa explained that it was important for the creative team to tell a story structured like a feature film, ensuring it features a clear beginning, development, and end.

Blade Runner 2099 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on November 25.
