Aldad said initial indicators of recovery include normalized sleep patterns, returning appetite, renewed concentration, reduced irritability and sufficient physical energy to complete basic household tasks.

In psychiatric care, the ability to perform routine domestic chores, such as cooking, cleaning or managing daily errands, serves as an important practical measure of functional capacity. Aldad explained that physical energy and physiological balance typically return before a patient experiences a noticeable shift in emotional outlook.

The psychiatrist warned that such improvements in physical well-being are not always immediately recognized as progress by the individual experiencing them. A person may still not feel happy and may continue to return to heavy thoughts, but they recover more quickly from a bad day and break out of emotional anxiety spirals faster.

Behavioral shifts also mark a transition away from depressive isolation. Rather than withdrawing into themselves, recovering individuals begin reaching out to a friend or therapist for support.

Aldad noted that patients undergoing recovery may also experience feelings of boredom and may even start complaining about everyday frustrations. The doctor indicated that complaining is actually a positive sign of returning to life sufficiently to hold grievances and demands against it.

Signs of progress in therapy

Another green flag during recovery is a shift in the nature of therapy sessions. Aldad said progress is evident when conversations with a therapist focus on specific problems and concrete results, rather than general feelings of being out of sorts.

In mental health treatment, green flags refer to encouraging behavioral indicators that signal emotional healing and effective coping strategies. PureWow, a digital media outlet that covers health and wellness, frequently publishes expert guidance on recognizing these subtle therapeutic milestones.

To assist treatment, the doctor recommended that patients track key health data and share the information with their specialist. This includes monitoring sleep schedules, tracking fluctuating energy levels throughout the day, and recording any moments of relief or active involvement.

As an example of meaningful engagement, Aldad highlighted successfully navigating a family gathering, which can serve as a measurable milestone in a patient's emotional recovery.

Depression is a clinical mental health condition characterized by persistent low mood, fatigue, and altered sleep or appetite. Medical reference sources note that recovery is often an incremental process, where physiological stabilization regularly precedes psychological relief.

Lifestyle factors in mental well-being

The insights follow previous statements by psychiatrist Javier Quintero, who highlighted the broader relationship between daily lifestyle habits and psychological health by stating that living with a dog is beneficial for both physical and mental well-being.

Quintero explained that dog ownership involves routine daily walks, which actively mitigate the adverse health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle.

A sedentary lifestyle, defined by extended periods of physical inactivity, is widely recognized by public health authorities as a risk factor for both physical illnesses and mood disorders. Regular exercise, such as walking, helps stimulate circulation and release mood-regulating neurotransmitters, supporting overall psychological resilience.
