A 26-year-old Portuguese man named Álvaro was revived after being clinically dead for 79 minutes following a swimming incident on the Greek island of Zakynthos.
The victim, whose full name has not been released beyond his first name, was listed in serious condition but remained stable as of last Saturday, according to report details.
Emergency rescue off Zakynthos coast
Álvaro was on vacation on Zakynthos with his parents when the incident occurred on August 22. For reasons that remain unknown, he lost consciousness while swimming in the sea and submerged to a depth of 12 meters.
Greek media reported that the victim's father was the first person to notice that his son was in trouble. Hearing the father's frantic cries for help, the owner of a nearby luxury boat jumped into the water and managed to pull Álvaro up from the depth.
Resuscitation and hospital transport
The luxury boat owner transferred Álvaro to a coastal support vessel, which sped toward the shore. An ambulance was already waiting at the land site to transport the young man to the nearest medical facility.
Rescuers and civilians worked continuously on resuscitation efforts after bringing Álvaro out of the water. His heartbeat was restored 79 minutes after his rescue, and he regained consciousness while inside the ambulance on the way to the hospital.
