Pillows accumulate sweat and skin oil causing musty smells

Pillows accumulate sweat and skin oil causing musty smells

Pillows and bedding require regular washing to eliminate foul sweat smells that accumulate over time, cleaning experts told home management website The Spruce. As people sleep, body perspiration settles into pillow fibers and creates persistent odors if left untreated.

Skin oil, also known as sebum, represents one of the primary causes of unpleasant pillow smells. When sweat mixes with saliva or sebum, the combined moisture sinks deep into the bedding fabric and develops a stale, musty scent over time.

Trapped moisture from perspiration can also prevent pillows from drying out completely, creating conditions that foster mold growth. Fungal accumulation inside the pillow filling generates an earthy, damp odor that requires targeted cleaning to remove.

Certain bedding materials trap heat and fluids more easily due to their construction. Experts explained that polyurethane memory foam features a highly porous structure that absorbs heat, skin oil, and sweat. This porous design creates a humid environment inside the foam, making it easier for foul odors to develop.

Signs pillows need cleaning or replacing

Homeowners can monitor several clear indicators to determine when bedding requires attention. Experts identified six warning signs that signal a pillow needs to be washed or replaced entirely:

  • Yellowing of the outer fabric
  • Visible surface stains
  • A sour or musty smell
  • No cleaning performed for more than six months
  • An unpleasant odor that remains after a standard wash
  • Lumps forming inside the pillow filling

Washing methods for different pillow types

Cleaning techniques depend on the specific material used inside the pillow. Most traditional cotton and down pillows can be safely washed in a washing machine using mild detergent on a delicate cycle. Pouring half a cup of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser provides additional disinfection during the cycle.

Synthetic memory foam and latex pillows require a different approach because machine washing damages them. Experts warned that polyurethane foam and latex absorb excessive amounts of water in a machine cycle. Instead, these pillows should be placed in a bathtub filled with water, mild detergent, and half a cup of white vinegar. Users should scrub out any visible stains, gently squeeze out excess water, and allow the pillows to dry completely.

Dry treatment methods can also eliminate trapped odors without full immersion. Sprinkling baking soda over the surface of a pillow helps draw out lingering smells. The baking soda should remain on the fabric for several hours before being vacuumed off, after which the pillow should be left to air out in a well-ventilated room.

Direct outdoor sunlight provides another effective way to refresh bedding. Placing pillows in the sun for several hours and turning them over to expose both sides helps guarantee full hygiene, as sunlight naturally freshens the material.

Fabric care and stain removal

Durable fabric care extends to bed linens as well as pillows. Experts noted that fresh lemon juice serves as a natural bleaching agent for discolored sheets and pillowcases. The natural acid in lemon juice breaks down stubborn stains and brightens dull fabrics. Hanging freshly washed linens in direct sunlight after treating them with lemon juice enhances the whitening effect.
