Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith Mark 25 Years Married

Pierce Brosnan, the 73-year-old actor best known for playing James Bond, has spent more than three decades with the same woman by his side. He and Keely Shaye Smith, 62, marked 25 years of marriage in August 2026, with a relationship that now spans 32 years in total.

The couple first met in 1994 in Mexico and married on August 4, 2001, in Ireland. A few days after their anniversary, according to the Daily Mail, the pair were spotted in Sydney enjoying a romantic boat ride around the harbour, appearing relaxed and affectionate during their trip to Australia.

A chance meeting in Mexico and a wedding in Ireland

Brosnan and Smith first met in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 1994. Smith was working as a journalist at the time and had travelled to the area for work. She ended up meeting Brosnan at a party, and the two were drawn to each other immediately.

Smith has recalled being struck by him from the very first moment, describing him as charming and recalling a mischievous glint in his eyes. On their first date, the pair sat under the stars, held hands and talked until three in the morning.

Brosnan has repeatedly described how significant that meeting was for him. When work kept them apart, he made sure to send her plane tickets so she could be close to him. He has said that even if he searched a million times over, he does not believe he would find another woman like her.

The couple went on to have two sons, Dylan Brosnan and Paris Brosnan, and on August 4, 2001, they sealed their relationship with a wedding in Ireland.

Twenty-five years on from that wedding, Brosnan still speaks about his wife with notable warmth. In an interview in 2025, he said Smith still makes his heart sing and his world turn, adding that what they truly enjoy is simply being in each other's company. The couple have spoken several times about the secret to their marriage, stressing that even after all these years they still enjoy spending time together and remain close friends.

The loss of his first wife, Cassandra Harris

Before meeting Smith, Brosnan endured a profound personal tragedy. His first wife was the Australian actress Cassandra Harris, whom he married in 1980. Harris already had two children from a previous marriage, Charlotte and Christopher, and after their biological father died in 1986, Brosnan adopted both of them. He and Harris also had a son of their own, Sean Brosnan.

In 1987, Harris was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She fought the illness for around four years before she died on December 28, 1991, at the age of 43.

Brosnan has spoken openly about how deeply her death affected him and the grief that followed. The family would suffer an especially cruel repeat of that loss years later, when his adopted daughter, Charlotte Brosnan, died in 2013 at the age of 41, also from ovarian cancer.

Three decades since that night in Mexico

Three years after Harris's death, Smith came into Brosnan's life. It was not a story that began in Hollywood or on a film set, but through a chance encounter at a party in Mexico.

From that night in 1994 to the present, more than three decades have passed, bringing two children, a marriage of 25 years, major professional successes and difficult family moments along the way.

For Brosnan, happiness ultimately comes down to the simplest moments with Smith. He has described enjoying sitting with her on the beach, watching the sunset, sharing a glass of champagne and talking about their day.
