Actress Penelope Cruz broke down in uncontrollable tears at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday as her new film Bunker received a 15-and-a-half-minute standing ovation.
Her husband Javier Bardem, 57, comforted the emotional 52-year-old star as the glittering premiere at the Sala Grande theatre drew the longest applause recorded at the 2026 festival so far.
Director Florian Zeller ensured his lead stars shared the spotlight with the cheering audience, taking Cruz and Bardem by the hands to lead them to the front of the auditorium. Bardem then stepped aside to gesture proudly toward his wife, who wore a custom red Chanel gown designed by Matthieu Blazy as the crowd continued to applaud.
The Venice Film Festival, held annually on the Lido island in Venice, Italy, is the oldest film festival in the world. Established in 1932, it forms one of the prestigious Big Three international film festivals alongside Cannes and Berlin, with the Sala Grande serving as its main venue for high-profile red carpet premieres.
Longest Ovations of Venice 2026
The 15-and-a-half-minute response for Bunker fell just two minutes short of the longest standing ovation in recent Venice Film Festival history. That record was set in 2024, when director Pedro Almodovar's drama The Room Next Door received a 17-minute standing ovation from festival audiences.
The 2026 festival has already produced a series of unusually emotional and extended ovations. Last week, actor John Malkovich was moved to tears when his Oscar-tipped film Wild Horse Nine received a 13-minute ovation from the crowd.
Other major premieres have also drawn strong reactions from festival goers. Primetime, directed by Lance Oppenheim and starring Robert Pattinson and Bucking Fastard, received a seven-minute ovation. Director Werner Herzog's latest drama, starring sisters Kate Mara and Rooney Mara, likewise earned a seven-minute standing ovation.
Plot and Critical Reception of Bunker
Bunker marks the ninth time Cruz and Bardem have collaborated on screen together. The psychological thriller has already opened to glowing reviews, including a four-star rating from Daily Mail film critic Brian Viner.
The storyline centers on married couple Sofia and Miguel, whose 17-year marriage faces severe strain. Miguel, an architect played by Bardem, accepts a morally ambiguous project to construct a luxury survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, played by Paul Dano.
While Miguel becomes absorbed in the secretive project, Sofia, played by Cruz, begins working closely with an American novelist named Jeremy Gray, played by actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Director Florian Zeller, best known for directing the Academy Award-winning drama The Father, adapted and helmed the suspenseful project, showcasing the dynamic chemistry between his two real-life lead actors.
Off-Screen Romance and Family Life
In real life, Cruz and Bardem have been married for 16 years. They are parents to two children: 15-year-old son Leo and 13-year-old daughter Luna. The Hollywood couple first met more than 30 years ago on a movie set in their native Spain.
The pair first met in 1992 on the set of the Spanish film Jamon jamon, directed by Bigas Luna. At the time, Cruz was 17 years old and Bardem was 23. Although they played romantic interests in the comedy-drama, they remained friends and did not begin dating until 15 years later.
They reconnected romantically in 2007 while filming Woody Allen's romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona. It's been a lot of years, and I haven't seen a hint of malice in her."
Bardem also joked about his wife's iconic beauty, adding: "On top of that, she's amazingly f****** beautiful! When I see her being photographed on some magazines, I go, 'Is that my wife? Jesus, is it? It must be.'"
