Pavlos of Greece Pays Tribute to Late King Harald V

Pavlos of Greece has publicly expressed his deep sadness following the death of his uncle King Harald V of Norway, who passed away on Friday morning, August 28.

Writing in a statement published on his personal Instagram account, the head of the former Greek royal family highlighted the historical connections and parallel lives that bind his family to the Norwegian monarchy.

Pavlos stated that the ties between the two royal houses have been preserved and strengthened across generations. He noted that this relationship extended from the close friendship between his grandfather, King Paul, and King Harald's father, King Olav V, to the deep bond shared by his own father, King Constantine II, and King Harald V.

He added that the bond between King Constantine and King Harald was forged through their shared love for the sea and sailing, noting that these historic ties continue to unite the two families today.

The Greek and Norwegian royal families share historical links through the House of Glücksburg. The Greek monarchy was officially abolished following a constitutional referendum in 1974, though members of the family maintain close ceremonial and personal ties with other European reigning houses. King Constantine II, the last monarch of Greece, died in January 2023, leaving his eldest son Pavlos as head of the former royal house.

Generational ties and royal succession

Reflecting on the character and public service of the late monarch, Pavlos stated that King Harald devoted his life to Norway and its people, serving his nation with dignity, warmth, and an unwavering sense of duty. He described his late uncle as a deeply beloved ruler and a person of great kindness, morals, and humanity.

Pavlos said his thoughts and prayers were with Queen Sonja, the new monarch King Haakon VIII, and the entire Norwegian Royal Family during what he described as a deeply painful time.

Speaking on behalf of himself and his wife, Marie-Chantal, Pavlos extended their deepest condolences to Queen Sonja, King Haakon VIII, the royal family, and the people of Norway for the loss of a deeply respected monarch.

As King Haakon VIII assumes the responsibilities of the Crown, Pavlos expressed complete confidence that the new sovereign will continue his father's exceptional legacy with the same level of dedication to Norway and its citizens.

A final tribute to King Harald V

King Harald V had reigned over Norway since 1991, succeeding his father King Olav V. Under the Norwegian constitution, the crown passes to his successor, who now assumes the title of King Haakon VIII.

Concluding his message, Pavlos offered a prayer for the late monarch, wishing that King Harald V rest in peace and asking God to rest his soul, comfort the Norwegian public, and guide the new king.

He added that King Harald's memory would remain eternally alive in their hearts with love, respect, and deep gratitude.
