Patriarch Bartholomew Urges Open Orthodox Role in France

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew arrived in France on Monday, October 5, 2026, leading an official delegation to open an international scientific conference in Chantilly dedicated to evaluating the legacy of the 2016 Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church.

Speaking at the opening of the four day gathering, which runs through Thursday, October 8, the spiritual leader stated that the Church must function as a liberator of History rather than as its opponent.

The conference, organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, brings together hierarchs, representatives of Orthodox Churches, university academics, and international researchers to discuss the Orthodox Diaspora, relations with the broader Christian world, and the mission of the Church in modern society.

The event marks ten years since the Holy and Great Council met in Crete in June 2016 following decades of preparation, representing the first pan Orthodox assembly on such a scale in nearly 1,200 years.

Although ten of the fourteen autocephalous Orthodox Churches participated in Crete, the absence of the Churches of Antioch, Russia, Bulgaria, and Georgia presented a major challenge for organizers, though it did not force the cancellation of the council.

Reflecting on those decisions a decade later, Bartholomew revisited his concept of a council after the Council, emphasizing that official synodal documents must translate into the daily life, pastoral care, and social initiatives of local congregations.

Addressing Secularisation and Youth Engagement

In his opening address, Patriarch Bartholomew warned against the twin dangers of secularisation and sterile introversion, asserting that an effective Christian message cannot originate from a closed or fearful institution.

He framed human freedom not as individual isolation or rights without limits, but as mutual responsibility, coexistence, and meaningful relationships with others.

Turning to younger generations, the Patriarch stressed that youth should be treated as active carriers of Church life rather than mere recipients of ecclesiastical action.

He noted that religious tradition cannot be transmitted as a static set of rules, but must actively dialogue with the social, cultural, scientific, and technological questions of each new era.

Social Ethos and Environmental Responsibility

Highlighting the broader social mission of the Church, Bartholomew called for ongoing efforts to promote peace, reconciliation, respect for the human person, fundamental rights, and the protection of creation.

He advocated for a dialogical theology capable of interpreting the Gospel through the signs of the times while remaining guarded against the dangers of fundamentalism and prioritizing interfaith dialogue.

The conference program features a dedicated session on the document titled For the Life of the World: Toward a Social Ethos of the Orthodox Church, involving Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and World Council of Churches representatives.

The proceedings will culminate in a round table panel featuring Archbishop John of Albania, while official schedules indicate no formal meetings between the Patriarch and French government officials during his visit.

Social Unrest and Global Security Events

The Patriarchal visit coincides with major social unrest across France, where hundreds of thousands of students demonstrated in major cities, resulting in clashes with police in Paris, tear gas deployment, and blockades at nearly 1,000 schools.
