The comedy mystery series Only Murders in the Building will return for its sixth season on Disney+ on December 8, 2026, moving lead stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez from New York to London for a brand new investigation.
The change of country comes with a title update for the show, which will be known as Only Murders in London for its upcoming sixth instalment. Disney+ will release new episodes weekly on Tuesdays following the premiere, and the streaming service has released first official images of the main cast in their new British setting.
A new setting and title update
Title changes for established television series remain rare without substantial story justification. The move mirrors recent rebranding efforts in international television, such as the Colombian comedy series Betty la Fea adopting the title Mas Fea Que Nunca for its continuation. For Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora, leaving their familiar Upper West Side apartment building marks the first time the series has explored an entirely foreign location.
Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, the acclaimed series originally centred on three neighbours in the fictional Arconia building in Manhattan who bond over their shared obsession with true crime podcasts. Martin plays semi-retired actor Charles-Haden Savage, Short plays flamboyant Broadway director Oliver Putnam, and Gomez plays younger artist Mabel Mora. Together, the trio launch their own podcast while solving real homicides inside their building complex.
Investigation into Cinda Canning
The storyline for season six picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of the fifth season. The season five finale left podcast producer Cinda Canning, played by Tina Fey, apparently dead. Canning was the rival true crime podcaster whose hit show originally inspired the main trio to begin investigating murders themselves.
Driven by the mystery surrounding her apparent death, Charles, Oliver and Mabel must travel across the Atlantic to London to uncover who killed her. The investigation forces the American podcasters to navigate a fresh web of suspects in the United Kingdom.
British mystery tradition and guest stars
The move to London allows the production to introduce a new group of particularly eccentric characters, drawing on the long British tradition of detective fiction and the cozy mystery subgenre.
Joining the cast for the sixth season are several prominent British screen actors, including Olivia Colman, David Tennant, Peter Capaldi, Martin Freeman, Nicola Coughlan, Jodie Whittaker and Jennifer Saunders.
Alongside the new arrivals, previous guest stars will return to their roles. Meryl Streep reprises her role as actress Loretta Durkin, while Da'Vine Joy Randolph returns as NYPD Detective Donna Williams.
