Solo Leveling, the webtoon that has grown into one of the most successful anime series of the moment, may be facing its most serious challenge yet. Omniscient Reader, an anime adaptation of a rival franchise, is edging closer to release even without a confirmed date, raising questions about how long Solo Leveling can hold its lead.
The story follows Sung Jinwoo, a hunter who starts out as one of the weakest in his world before gaining the power to level up like a video game character. It began as a South Korean web novel before becoming a webtoon and then an anime, part of a wider wave of webtoons, Korean digital comics that have increasingly been turned into anime, films and live-action series around the world.

Several series have tried to challenge Solo Leveling's dominance since it began airing, but none has managed to match its popularity. So far nothing has emerged to pose a genuine threat, largely because the series has rarely faced real competition.
That situation may not last. Solo Leveling itself is heading into one of its strongest periods, with a theatrical release for Solo Leveling: Beyond the System, a possible return for the manhwa Solo Leveling: Ragnarok after its pause, and a live-action series backed by the streaming service Netflix. None of these three projects has a confirmed release date, and most are expected to arrive at the earliest in 2027 or 2028.
Omniscient Reader closes in
Omniscient Reader is set to get its own anime adaptation, first announced at Anime Expo 2024. Public anticipation has held up in the time since, even without any new footage released, a sign that interest in the project has not faded.
Anime Expo, where the adaptation was unveiled, is one of the largest anime and manga conventions in North America, held annually in Los Angeles and often used by studios to reveal new projects to a global audience.

The video game company Com2uS, which is currently developing a game based on Omniscient Reader, shared unexpected news about the anime. According to the company, the game's launch will coincide with the anime's premiere. That release is estimated to land sometime in 2028, though the identity of the famous Japanese studio said to be producing the anime has not been revealed.
Com2uS is a South Korean mobile game developer best known for titles such as Summoners War, and has increasingly built games around popular webtoon and web novel franchises.
A possible 2028 turning point
That timeline effectively means Omniscient Reader will not arrive before 2028. The delay is unwelcome news for fans waiting impatiently for the series, but it has also been read as a sign of the decline Solo Leveling could face that same year. Because Solo Leveling's main expansions are expected to launch in 2027, Omniscient Reader could end up facing little competition once it debuts in 2028.
The timing could also be a deliberate choice to stop the two franchises from cutting into each other's audience, particularly since both titles come from Redice Studio, the South Korean studio behind the artwork of both series and now with a direct stake in how they are scheduled against one another.
With an anime and a video game both on the way, Omniscient Reader is positioning itself as a direct rival to Solo Leveling across several formats at once. Meanwhile, with no new Solo Leveling releases confirmed yet, anticipation for the series could gradually fade. If that happens, the arrival of Omniscient Reader may prove to be the final blow to its reign.
