Oatmeal can significantly lower systolic blood pressure in adults when eaten regularly as a whole grain breakfast, according to a report by Health magazine based on a comprehensive 2023 scientific review.
Researchers found that the moderate reduction in systolic blood pressure, which measures the pressure in arteries when the heart contracts, was most pronounced among individuals who already suffered from hypertension. The cardiovascular benefits were also stronger for adults who substituted refined grain items like white bread or processed cereal flakes with whole oatmeal.
The positive impact on blood pressure was particularly evident when participants consumed enough oats to reach a daily intake of at least 5 grams of beta-glucan. Studies indicated that achieving these measurable reductions required consistent oatmeal consumption over a period of eight weeks or longer.
How oats relax blood vessels
Medical experts continue to investigate how daily oat consumption aids the cardiovascular system, but several primary biological theories explain the effect. One major mechanism involves keeping blood vessels relaxed and flexible, allowing blood to circulate with lower resistance throughout the body.
Oats are a natural source of magnesium, an essential dietary mineral involved in regulating vascular tone and muscle function. A diet rich in magnesium is linked to minor reductions in blood pressure, and while magnesium alone does not cure clinical hypertension, regular dietary intake as part of a balanced diet supports healthy vessel function.
Dietary fiber in oatmeal also plays a key role once it reaches the digestive tract. Intestinal bacteria ferment oat fiber to produce short-chain fatty acids, organic compounds that send chemical signals prompting blood vessels to dilate and relax.
Reducing vascular inflammation and cholesterol
Oatmeal also helps protect the heart by reducing vascular inflammation. While acute inflammation is part of the body's normal immune defense, chronic low-grade inflammation damages artery linings and contributes to high blood pressure. Oats contain natural plant compounds, specifically unique antioxidants called avenanthramides, which calm low-grade inflammation by decreasing inflammatory signals.
Whole grain oats are especially effective because they retain the outer bran layer and inner germ, where these antioxidant compounds are concentrated. This viscous intestinal gel traps cholesterol and digestive bile acids, allowing them to be excreted naturally from the body. In response to the loss of bile acids, the liver pulls circulating LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream to generate new bile acids. Over time, this biological process lowers LDL cholesterol in the blood, permitting blood to flow with less resistance and reducing arterial pressure.
Preventing arterial plaque buildup
By decreasing circulating LDL cholesterol, regular oatmeal intake also slows the accumulation of arterial plaque. Plaque is a buildup of fatty substances, cholesterol, and cellular waste that adheres to artery walls.
