Film producer Sergei Selyanov has predicted that the upcoming Russian science fiction feature film Ninth Planet, starring actor Yura Borisov, will set a new record for overseas sales among domestic motion pictures.
Speaking in an interview with journalist Alena Doletskaya for the program Editorial Opinions, Selyanov said his projection is based on distribution negotiations that have already taken place. He added that quality cinema without strictly national specificity should transcend international borders.
According to Selyanov, the central theme of the production is that love saves the world. The narrative follows an auto mechanic named Dima Khrust who begins recalling memories of serving on a distant planet, fighting alien monsters, seeing breathtaking landscapes, and falling in love with a woman named Polina.
Science fiction plot and character memory
The plot develops as Dima discovers his former comrades do not share these recollections. His fellow service members insist that they only completed routine army service together. The protagonist becomes convinced that someone altered their memories after he encounters Polina in real life, realizing he must return to the hazardous planet to uncover the truth.
Selyanov explained that Dima and his fellow soldiers, portrayed by Yura Borisov, Maxim Emelyanov, Konstantin Beloshapka, and Semyon Litvinov, are designed not as superheroes but as ordinary cool buddies from the block. The producer stressed that portraying characters who feel like they come from a neighboring street was essential for marketing, allowing audiences to connect directly with the figures on screen.
