Actor Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the upcoming second season of the HBO Max television series Harry Potter.

Production on the second season, an adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is already underway ahead of the premiere of season one this Christmas.

HBO Max has placed high expectations on the new adaptation of J.K. Rowling's fantasy novels. The streaming service plans to produce at least seven seasons over a period of no less than a decade, with filming on the first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, already completed.

The Role of Gilderoy Lockhart
Gilderoy Lockhart is introduced in the second book as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The character is a famous wizard celebrated across the magical world for his charm, vanity, and a long list of alleged achievements against dark creatures and dark wizards.

Lockhart is well known for authoring numerous books detailing his supposed exploits, although his massive ego does not match his actual abilities. His arrival at Hogwarts quickly demonstrates that fame and real skill do not always align, particularly when students Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger begin to uncover what lies behind his public image.

Hoult takes over the role from Northern Irish actor Kenneth Branagh, who portrayed Lockhart in the 2002 feature film adaptation Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Nicholas Hoult Career and Future Projects
Hoult brings extensive film and television experience to the fantasy production. He previously portrayed the character Beast in several X-Men films and recently starred as Lex Luthor in Superman. He is scheduled to return to the comic book role in Man of Tomorrow in 2027.

His feature film credits also include Mad Max: Fury Road, Nosferatu, The Menu, Juror #2, and Renfield.
On television, Hoult gained recognition for his portrayal of Emperor Peter III in the historical comedy series The Great. That performance earned him an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations.
Production Schedule and Release Expectations
With filming concluded on the first season, viewers will see the initial episodes of Harry Potter on HBO Max in late 2026. Production will continue on the second season as the network builds out its decade-long release schedule.
