Yusuke's life takes a radical and unexpected turn when he dies after being hit by a car while saving a young child. His selfless action takes even the high-ranking officials of the spirit world by surprise.
Having no assigned place in either heaven or hell due to the sudden nature of his death, Yusuke is offered a unique opportunity to return to life if he agrees to become a spirit detective. Once restored to his body, his new job involves investigating paranormal phenomena in the human world and hunting down demons that cross the border to threaten humanity.
To complete his missions, Yusuke learns to channel his internal spirit energy. He forms a powerful team alongside his former high school rival Kuwabara and two lethal demons, Kurama and Hiei, who join with their own individual interests.
