Natalie Cassidy and Jack Ryder reunite for new rail campaign

Actors Natalie Cassidy, 43, and Jack Ryder, 45, have reunited for a National Rail campaign 24 years after playing teenage lovers Sonia and Jamie in EastEnders.

The pair appeared together on ITV breakfast show Good Morning Britain today to launch the Proper Catch-Up Carriage project, a campaign encouraging train passengers to put down their mobile phones and have a good conversation.

Although the former co-stars maintained contact over the years by sending the odd message or heart emoji, they revealed during the broadcast that they had not seen each other physically or been in the same room since filming their final scenes together for the BBC soap opera.

Train platform reunion

Recalling their emotional reunion on a station platform for the campaign filming, Cassidy explained that the bond between the two actors remained instant despite the decades apart.

Cassidy said: "When we saw each other on the train platform, we just didn't let go of one another. It was like coming home. We are like brother and sister."

Reflecting on their meeting, she added: "It's been 24 years but I am so pleased we've seen each other and we won't leave it that long again."

The reunion forms the centerpiece of National Rail's Proper Catch-Up Carriage initiative, which encourages commuters to put away digital screens and engage in face-to-face conversations while travelling on the railway network across Great Britain.

Coping with grief and fame

During their joint appearance, both actors disclosed that they were experiencing difficult personal circumstances off screen when their characters' romance came to a tragic end in 2002.

Cassidy revealed that she was navigating profound family grief while shooting the emotional final storyline.

Cassidy said: "I had lost my mum in May 2022 and we filmed in October of that year, so I found the storyline really painful. I channelled a lot of my grief into it."

Ryder similarly struggled with the overwhelming pressure of sudden television fame as a young performer.

In an interview with The Sun newspaper, Ryder explained that he chose to leave EastEnders at the age of 21 because the intense public scrutiny became unmanageable.

Ryder said: "I just couldn't go anywhere. I was getting so much attention and stuff, there was such a big impact in that sense. It was hard and a whirlwind. It was a mad thing and I didn't really align with it."

At the height of their television popularity, the level of fan attention became so extreme that the pair were once asked to leave a McDonald's restaurant inside the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent because the venue lacked sufficient security to handle the crowds.

Ryder regularly topped teen magazine lists as one of the most fancied actors in the country, was mobbed in public spaces, and even had a stalker.

Life after Walford

Following his departure from EastEnders, Ryder married pop singer Kym Marsh, a member of the group Hear'Say, in August 2002. Although he had stepped back from high-profile acting work, the media interest surrounding his marriage kept his personal life in the spotlight.

The couple separated six years later. Ryder is now in a relationship with his partner Ella, and they have a five-year-old daughter named Marnie.

Cassidy is in a long-term relationship with BBC cameraman Marc Humphrey. The couple share a daughter named Joanie, born in 2016. Cassidy also has an older daughter, Eliza, from a previous relationship.

Both actors noted that their personal lives have proven far brighter and more peaceful than those of the characters they portrayed in Albert Square.

Tragic Christmas storyline

Sonia Jackson and Jamie Mitchell were established as one of the most iconic teenage couples on British television during their run on EastEnders, the BBC flagship soap set in the fictional London borough of Walford.

A massive audience of 16 million viewers tuned in on Christmas Day in 2002 to watch the tragic conclusion of their romance.

In the soap's narrative, Sonia gave birth to a baby girl named Chloe at age 15 without realising she was pregnant, following a one-night stand with Martin Fowler before she began dating Jamie. Sonia eventually gave the child up for adoption.

The romance ended in heartbreak when Jamie was run over and accidentally killed by Martin Fowler outside Walford East Tube station, moments after Jamie had bought Sonia an engagement ring.

Ryder revealed that his own family decided against watching the dramatic exit episode when it aired on television, stating: "it would have been a bit dark and a bit weird."
