Hollywood actor Michael Douglas has released an explosive memoir recounting physical abuse by his father, admitting to secret illicit affairs, and laying bare decades of drug use and family turmoil. The 82-year-old star details his six-decade career and personal life in One Helluva Ride, insisting it was time to set the record straight on his own terms.

Writing in his autobiography, Douglas explained that he wanted to present the real story rather than a version shaped by headlines or box office numbers. He said fame can blur the truth and described the book as his attempt to bring his life back into focus.

Douglas is a veteran American actor and producer who won Academy Awards for producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and starring as Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. Raised by movie star parents Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill, he established himself as one of Hollywood's leading figures.

Physical abuse and fatherly strain

Douglas revealed that he waited to publish the book until after the death of his father, honorary Oscar winner Kirk Douglas, who died in 2020 at the age of 103. He explained that he spent much of his life trying to escape his father's shadow and mend their fractured relationship.

Growing up, Douglas and his younger brother Joel were terrified of their father's temper. Douglas wrote that his father belonged to a generation that hit their children, recalling that if they screwed up, his father would hit them. He added that his mother used a hairbrush for discipline.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Douglas said he was uncomfortable discussing the early years and the physical abuse while his father was alive. He noted that it took time as they grew older to warm up to his father and forgive him.

Marijuana dealing in college

Before achieving fame as an actor, Douglas briefly considered a career in law before studying drama at the University of California. Although his father provided a $10,000 trust fund, it was insufficient to cover his tuition fees and living expenses.

To fund his education, Douglas turned to dealing marijuana. He bought 44 kilograms of marijuana in California for $75 a kilo, packed it into two suitcases, and sold it in New York for $500 a kilo while visiting his parents.

Douglas recalled that he paid for his final two years of college and graduated without debt through dealing. He acknowledged that applying for a student loan would have been more legal and responsible, but said the idea never occurred to him at the time.

After decades of denying rumours, Douglas finally admitted to having an affair with Romancing The Stone co-star Kathleen Turner (pictured) while married to Diandra Luker

Secret affair with Kathleen Turner

In the memoir, Douglas admitted for the first time to having an affair with his co-star Kathleen Turner while filming the 1984 action-comedy Romancing The Stone. At the time, Douglas was married to his first wife, Diandra Luker, with whom he shares his son Cameron.

Douglas wrote that he was immediately attracted to Turner, describing the relationship as growing naturally from their close working environment and mutual respect. He revealed that prior to the affair with Turner, he had been having an affair with Romancing The Stone screenwriter Diane Thomas while his marriage to Luker was in a bad place.

Gossip surrounding the set reached a peak when Luker flew to Mexico to confront Turner directly. Turner was dating real estate mogul Jay Weiss at the time, whom she later married. Both actors kept the affair hidden from co-star Danny DeVito and director Robert Zemeckis, maintaining a pact of silence that lasted four decades. Douglas and Luker eventually divorced in 2000.

Stage fright and substance struggles

Despite his long career, Douglas revealed that he suffered from severe stage fright during his early theatre work. Intimidated by his father's legacy in the spotlight, he frequently vomited into a bucket before going on stage.

His anxiety persisted into his film career. While shooting the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction alongside Glenn Close, Douglas relied on drinking alcohol before filming intimate scenes to cope with his nerves.

In 1992, Douglas entered a rehabilitation facility for alcohol and substance abuse after Luker caught him with another woman in a Los Angeles hotel room and threatened divorce. Luker ultimately filed for divorce three years later in 1995.

Douglas disclosed that drug use was widespread in Hollywood during that era. He described leaving $100 for valet attendants at talent agencies, who would place a gram of cocaine inside his car's center console. He also admitted to taking drugs with former football star OJ Simpson and recalled once waking up with a drinking straw still hanging from his nose. At one Golden Globes party, an intoxicated Douglas told actress Julia Roberts to shove her award where the sun does not shine.

Romantic conquests and sex addiction denial

The memoir details numerous romantic encounters throughout his youth, ranging from an Israeli soldier to an older woman. Douglas traced his early sexual awakening to a summer job in an editing room at Universal Studios, where he spent lunch breaks watching out-takes of Janet Leigh in the shower scene from Psycho.

Early in his career, Douglas shared a one-bedroom apartment in New York with fellow actor Danny DeVito. The pair hung a sock on the door handle to indicate when one of them had a female guest inside.

Despite his candid accounts of numerous affairs, Douglas strongly rejected past media reports claiming he entered rehab for sex addiction in the 1990s, stating firmly that he was never a sex addict.

Addressing a British reporter who questioned his extensive love life, Douglas insisted he viewed himself as a healthy product of the 1960s. When asked about an anecdote in which he made five quick phone calls to break off existing relationships after Catherine Zeta-Jones requested monogamy, Douglas clarified that he simply ended the flings he was pursuing at the time.

Marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones

Douglas fell in love with Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones after seeing her in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro. Despite a 25-year age gap, the pair met at the Deauville Film Festival that year, where Douglas told her he would be the father of her children.

In echoes to his relationship with his own father, Douglas' eldest son Cameron has previously spoken about their frosty relationship (pictured with Cameron and Kirk in 2018)

The couple married in 2000 and have two children together, Dylan and Carys. However, in August 2013, Zeta-Jones announced they were taking time apart to evaluate their marriage. The split came two months after Douglas publicly attributed his throat cancer to oral sex, a claim his publicist later retracted and Douglas expressed regret over.

Writing about the separation, Douglas said he never gave up hope of reconciling with Zeta-Jones, calling her his best friend and life partner. The couple reunited within a year and remain married.

Family addiction and son Cameron

Douglas also addressed his strained relationship with his eldest son, Cameron, who suffered from severe cocaine and heroin addiction. In 2010, Cameron was sentenced to five years in prison for heroin possession and conspiracy to distribute drugs, serving seven years after smuggling drugs into prison.

Although Douglas funded Cameron's legal defense team, he admitted he did not write to his son in prison because he did not know what to say. Douglas noted that his half-brother Eric died from an accidental drug overdose at age 46 in 2004 following years of addiction.

Reflecting on his father Kirk attending family therapy sessions in his eighties to support Eric, Douglas stated that he chose not to spend his own later years attending rehabilitation sessions, asserting his right to live his own life.

Pushback against nepotism claims

While opening up about his past mistakes, Douglas firmly refused to accept being labeled a nepotism beneficiary, calling the term nepo baby snotty. He argued that in every other industry, parents are expected to help their children build careers.

His comments align with statements made by his wife Zeta-Jones, who previously described the phrase as horrific and defended children of famous parents who pursue creative careers on their own merit.
