McDonald's Happy Meals Win Over Adults on Weight Drugs

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski says adults on GLP-1 drugs are increasingly ordering Happy Meals for their smaller, controlled portions.

McDonald's Happy Meals Win Over Adults on Weight Drugs

McDonald's chief executive Chris Kempczinski said adult customers are increasingly ordering Happy Meal sets, the chain's combo traditionally marketed to children, because drugs known as GLP-1s are making them pay closer attention to portion size. The comments were reported by Inc.

Kempczinski said that as the popularity of GLP-1 medications grows, McDonald's expects overall calorie consumption among its customers to fall.

Menu Changes Underway

According to Inc, McDonald's has spent recent months testing lighter dishes, lower-sugar drinks and a range of different portion sizes on its menu. Other fast-food chains have reportedly run into similar shifts in customer behaviour.

The outlet noted that the fast-food industry's long-standing business model, offering more calories for less money, is starting to change. Millions of adults taking GLP-1 drugs are still visiting fast-food chains, the report said, but they are choosing to order smaller portions.

What GLP-1 Drugs Do

GLP-1 medications are a class of drugs, including semaglutide-based treatments sold under brand names such as Ozempic and Wegovy, that were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. They work by mimicking a natural gut hormone that slows digestion and signals fullness to the brain, and they have become widely used for weight loss in recent years.

Why a Kids' Meal Now Satisfies Adults

Dr Sean Arora, co-founder and chief executive of Arora Health & Aesthetics, explained that the reason people on GLP-1 drugs favour smaller, portion-controlled meals such as the Happy Meal comes down to biology. The drugs allow people to feel full after eating far less food, meaning a meal once positioned for children can now satisfy an adult appetite.

Arora said he has patients who once easily finished two Big Macs but now genuinely cannot get through a single cheeseburger.

He cautioned, however, that adults should not mistake a smaller portion for a balanced one. Arora said the Happy Meal does contain protein, carbohydrates and fat, but adults still need to think about the overall quality of what they eat and whether they are getting enough protein, fibre and essential nutrients across the day.

A New Kind of Eating Ritual

Registered dietitian and behavioural consultant Kylie King said she has observed a similar pattern among her own patients. She explained that people on these medications still need familiar eating rituals, just in smaller amounts.

King said the desire to eat something outweighs actual appetite for many patients, and a smaller portion size lets them keep that ritual without leftover food or physical discomfort.

Comparing Menus Abroad

Separately, American travel blogger Kelly Grace visited a McDonald's in Ukraine and compared it with locations in the United States, saying she had not expected to find such a varied menu. Grace said the Ukrainian McDonald's differed from its American counterpart not only in its range of dishes but in how they were presented, and that she was most struck by the fresh salads, seasonal offerings and exclusive items unique to the Ukrainian menu.
