Charalambos Lykoudis, the lawyer representing the family of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, said Thursday afternoon that he has no knowledge of the singer having left a will, as investigations continue into the circumstances of his death.
Speaking on the Greek television program Live News, Lykoudis was asked directly by host Nikos Evangelatos about reports circulating regarding whether Mazonakis had drawn up a will before he died.
The family lawyer was clear that, as of now, he has no knowledge of such a document. He said several colleagues had asked him about it, but that he was not aware of any such act.
Lykoudis's statement does not confirm that Mazonakis left no will, only that the family's own lawyer is not currently aware of one. Under Greek law, if no will exists, an estate passes undivided to the deceased's parents and siblings through statutory inheritance rules. In Mazonakis's case, that would mean his estate would pass jointly to his parents and his two sisters.
Family pushes for wider investigation
Lykoudis also outlined the family's next steps in investigating the circumstances of the singer's death. He said the first move is to request the appointment of a technical consultant who would work alongside state coroners during the autopsy. He said they were currently seeking that appointment so the consultant could join state forensic examiners the following morning for the autopsy.
The lawyer said he is also preparing a list of investigative actions to request from the authority handling the preliminary inquiry. These include lifting the phone privacy of the people involved, examining the first phone calls made after the incident, searching for any photographs taken during its initial stage, and reviewing the information relayed to paramedics from EKAB, Greece's National Centre for Emergency Care, when they arrived at the clinic in Kolonaki.
Lykoudis said the case runs very deep, and that he was preparing a list of a series of investigative actions to request from the authority conducting the preliminary inquiry.
Funeral plans still undecided
Lykoudis also addressed plans for Mazonakis's funeral, saying no final decision has yet been made. He said the family wants the funeral to take place at the Third Cemetery in Nikaia, a town near Piraeus that is the singer's birthplace, though final decisions will only be made once the necessary forensic procedures are complete.
Mazonakis, a popular Greek singer, died at the age of 54 following a cardiac arrest he suffered at a private clinic in Kolonaki, an upscale Athens neighborhood. Authorities are now investigating all aspects of the case.
